Preview Option with PM's

When writing PM's, the option to preview your message doesn't exist. Instead if you want to see what it looks like before you send it you have to fake reply somewhere and copy/paste the message and then preview it. I was just wondering if somone knows a better trick or if it would be a possibility to add that feature to PM's.

You could always reply to a thread, preview it, not post it, then cut and paste it into a PM window. But that's the non-lazy way out 😉

I know that's how you currently have to do it. See initial post:

Anandtech is a user of their S/W; not the developer.
Therefore enhancements must be provided by Fusetalk and when an upgrade happens, those enhancements may become active

As an aside, one of the former developers of FT was also formerly an admin here, so we were the testing ground for some new features...much to the dismay of some.

It would have the same benefit of the Preview mode for a post.

Allow you to see how your messaage would be presented to the reciever.

I understand that. But it is a private message, it is what it is, after previewing it what is there possibly you can change. How would you propose to manipulate it if you didn?t like the preview. I don?t get it. Are you on about paragraph structure, because even still you wouldn?t need to preview it, these adjustments can be done without previewing it (obviously).

I still dont see the point.

yup, we got to test "removing options that were helpful to the community" and "broken search engine" while they were in beta. when they went live we were the first to get them. i know some were dismayed, but i personally was stoked. it pretty much stopped my active fs/t time here, which gave me more free time to nef in OT.

I don't think that this forum software is known for that, but you can send that suggestion over to FuseTalk directly and they'll look into it.

I think it's a great idea. Sometimes you do not notice that a spelling mistake has been made, or whether a link is working properly, until you preview it.

I use preview every time I post here and I would do the same if it was available for PMs.

It would be particularly useful in the FS/FT forum to ensure your shipping and pricing information is correct and orderly.

Once you send a PM, you can't edit it. If there was a mistake, you would have to send another to let the person know that there was a mistake and what you really meant. Lets say that For Sale/For Trade has about one in every five people who communicate through PM's to do selling and trading business and have to send PM's explaining the error(s) in their previous PM. Multiply that by how many people are here at Anandtech in ALL of the sections, and that's alot of bandwidth going to proof reading.

That and it would be more convenient being able to make sure you don't sound like an idiot before you send a non-editable PM to someone.

For some, shipping information, telephone numbers, hardware specifics (models and such), etc. Who knows, the list could be endless as to what a messenger wants to polish.

True, but depending on the complexity of a messege, you might want to make sure all quotes line up correctly, links work, spelling is correct, etc. Again, it is nice to be able to see a post when it is in the form that the recepient will be seeing it in.

What I do is after I compose my PM, I will copy and paste it onto word or a text and view it before I send it !!

My guess is that FuseTalk may tack on the Preview option when they make a new updated forum software in the future.

Jason Clark has pretty much given up on the software so I doubt any new features will ever get implimented on this site. Fusetalk is still making new software but it doesn't look like we'll be upgrading anytime soon w/o Jason.

So basically the only things that are going to be updated here are the articles and reviews? When you take into account all of the minute things that need to be fixed, why do we have to update to a different forum software? Why can't the search engine, "Preview" options with PM's, etc. be dealt with individually instead of going to corporate to instigate a different forum design? I guess I just don't understand how these little things are such a big pain when this site carries the traffic of a userbase so knowledgeable with every area of modern day PC experiences. I'm sure we have some web page, software gurus here that would know how to fix these things in an instant.

as others have said: don't hold your breath . . . we have been waiting over 2 years for the SW forum to spin off games. 😛

AFAIK, most modern forums have a 'preview' for PMs. 😉

Since I haven't heard from Fusetalk and judging by how long it takes to implement changes here, I think it's safe to say that Anandtech cannot--or rather chooses not to--make itself a better forum with more modern options. At most I hope that this idea will be taken into consideration when the update for this forum's software happens.
