Preview: 2004 Dodge Durango

I saw it on tv, different looking.....
The whole "Hemi" thing is getting old..

Glad I'm not the only one thinking it looks like an overgrown minivan. Which is not to say a van, but overgrown mini...like a kid who couldn't fit in the desk because he was 6' 200lbs in 6th grade.

the Durango has a set of truly innovative tapered octagonal front frame rail tips that fold up into accordion pleats during a frontal impact and distribute crash energy around and under the passenger cabin.

While distributing crash forces is always a good thing, the thought of a frame that folds up like an accordian is a wee bit disconcerting.

I, too, don't like the design. The front looks like a minivan (thank you cab-forward design), the middle looks like an Explorer, and they took the taillights straight off a Jeep Liberty. I'm also not a huge fan of the giant grill and ever-sinking fenders/headlights.

However, I got to drive a preproduction 2005 model with the 5.7L Hemi.... that was supercharged! As big as the Durango grew, it moves very quickly when there are about 460 ponies pushing it! :D I have no idea whether or not that supercharged engine will ever make it to production. I was told by my boss "the boys at Dodge were just having some fun with it." I was only there to test, analyze, and design the braking system. Sometimes it's nice working for a Tier 1 supplier. :)

Edit: Some typos.

Beautiful !

Exterior isn't as distinctive as before but it works for a family hauler.
Interior looks more car-like.

The armrest isn't that wide, which stinks.. maybe the truck isn't as wide as i thought.
I like wider armrests like in Navigator because they make the truck feel much roomier, like your sitting at home on the couch.. (Hard to explain)

Gooooooooo Dodge !
Can't call em Dodgy anymore like i used to :)
