Preventing program from running at startup

I have a Athlon 64 Socket 754 3000+ computer running XP SP2. I have a USB scanner whose software runs at startup looking for the scanner. Most of the time I have the scanner turned off. When the scanner is off it takes quite a bit of time for the scanner's software to time out and let the computer finish starting up. Is there a program that can disable the scanner's startup program so I only run it when I want to? Thanks.
 
Go to MSCONFIG, and check the STARTUP menu/list. Uncheck anything related to the scanner including scanware. I'm running XP/SP3, and my scanner only runs when I tell it to.
