Prevent sleep while certain programs are running (Win7)

Is there any way/setting I can prevent Win7 from sleeping while certain programs are running without disabling sleep altogether?
E.g. Win7 will enter sleep mode while a backup is in progress, preventing it from completing.
Very, very annoying. Obviously, I would like to have backups run on a schedule but I also want to have sleep enabled without having to manually disable it every Monday at 1am just so backup can run uninterrupted.

(Handbrake is another app that will not prevent Win7 from sleeping)

Steam downloading a games doesn't prevent it from sleeping either. You would think Win7 wouldn't sleep if the HD or CPU was busy.

Or at least busy above a certain threshold (which should be editable).

another option would be to provide a "checkbox" under 'program properties' (along with all the compatibility options) that will prevent Win7 from sleeping while this program is running.
