prevent rust

Copper will form an oxide coating (it's a green color) on the surface that acts as a pretty good natural barrier to prevent corrosion deeper in the metal. If you want to keep it looking shiny and new, then you'll need to coat it with something.
 
Steel also doesnt 'rust'. Its oxidizing as well. All metals left unprotected will oxidize. A protective clearcoat often used on Cu++. Lacquer, clear enamel, clear epoxy most common. But wil need eventual recoating...

yeah, but iron oxide == rust. cupric oxide (or whatever?) != rust.
 
If its an antennae, I dont think any of those commonly available finishes would affect the radio properties either way.
Inside a microwave, I dont know...
