Pretty interesting Mod I did to my Dell laptop last night (LCD res upgrade)

So a while back I bought a Dell Vostro 1510 laptops. I just today got my new screen in mail. The basic screen for the vostro is the 1200 x 800. The resolution is really bad in my opinion. I managed to find a screen from a dell d800 and monified it to fit into the vostro 1510. Only cost me 58 bucks.

You can actually do this really to any laptop. It shouldn't really matter. As long as the size is the same and it's using a 30pin LVDS cable.

Sorry for the picture quality (taken with my cellphone camera)

how did you know the new panel had the same 30pin LVDS connection? or was it cross your fingers and hope for the best

I did some research and found pretty much most to all cables for the LCD panels are 30-pin. When I found a cheap display on ebay. I got the model number and gooled it. I looked for the data sheet. It had a diagram indicating 30 pin. This actually was the most important part.

There actually is a lot of data about these screens online because people convert them into projectors.

We do this probably 15-20 times a week for people who come in with busted screens and want a cheap replacement. We keep about 100 laptops that dont work that we took on trade in and we use them for spare parts. #1 thing we harvest from them are monitors to put in other laptops. Sometimes its a different res, or whatever. The customer tells us if he wants matte, or glossy, and we just match the res or go higher if he or she wants while trying to find a panel that fits from one of the harvested laptops. Cheap way for the customer to get back on his feet from an awful accident.

nice, OP

the greatest thing i loved about going from my T40 to my T60 was the high res. 1400x1050 is great. ill miss this when i swap it for a quad box soon and buy a netbook for taking around.
