Pretty important - Hardware Question

I recently bought this hardware bundle, to upgrade my computer:

Now I need a new processor... and I was thinking to buy an AMD Athlon 64 3000, or 3200 (not sure yet)... But today I found a thread in the Hot-Deal-Forum, which shows an opteron 140 for about 140 bucks.

I have no clue at all, what kind of performance the opteron has.. and if it would run on my EVGA Board.

Therefore my questions: Could somebody tell me something about the performance of the Opteron ... and ya,... would this CPU run on my MoBo?

Have a great day, guys..

As long as the opteron is a socket 939, it will run on that motherboard.
I'm no overclocking expert (just recently started to learn it) but from what I have
read, Opterons seem to overclock better than their AMD64 cousins. In my
opinion, you can't go wrong either way as I've o.c.'d my X2 3800 from 2.0
to 2.43 with no stability or cooling (air) issues at all. Personally, I'd rather buy
a processor brand new so I got the warrenty, but that's just me.

Are you sure that's an Opteron 140? I am not familiar with that CPU. The lowest priced Opteron I've seen is a 144. What clock speed does the 140 you're talking about run at? If it were a 144 for $140 then I'd say go for it.

Hey guys,

thanks for the answer.
Yes, I meant an opteron 144, my fault.

I am not planning to overclock my system, `cause I am not an expert in this kind of sport. Also I think, that it`s not necessary for me to overclock my system.. the games I wanna play will work fine with my new hardware conestellation.

It would be awesome, if someone with real knowledge could gimme a recommendation.

Athlon 64 3200, or Opteron 144 ? I have still no clue, what the performance-difference is. As i said,.. I am not planning to overclock my system... obviously this seems to be a plus for the opteron, which can be ignored in this case.

Let me just ask another question. I was plannign to buy Corsair Value Ram 3200 (2GB), but I have read several times that the chance is pretty high to get a broken stick. Can someone confirm that? The thing is.. I am german, and I am planning to go back to Germany next month. Computer hardware is cheaper here thant in GER, which allows me to save a good value of money. Because of the fact, that I dont wanna send the hardware back to America, i`d rather buy RAM thats a bit more expensive, if the Corsair Value Ram has a high error-rate.

Anyway, .. and have a great evening.

hmmm, of all value ram, corsair is the best, but you could look at some OCZ Gold? good ram. if you arent overclocking, legend has it that the Opty runs a bit cooler anyways, but yeah, the main reason to go Opteron is overclocking.

so, it looks like that will all be compatible. enjoy.

if you are not going to o/c then go the 3200, if there is any chance you may o/c in the future go the opty, but either way the performance will be close. personally i would go the cheaper one because i am a cheap bastard. look at my rig in sig - opty 144@2.5GHz stock V, you can't beat that for ~$150 😀
