Pretty good article on emulators, who knew it took that much power for accuracy!

I thought the part about Pong was interesting. 5-10fps for the most accurate emulation you can get.

I already knew it took many times the processing power of the original unit.
But 3GHZ is excessive. I was emulating in DOS and Win95 with a P150. And it actually ran OK. The extra power needed these days seems to be for getting it to look better than original, with heavy AA and such.

Did you read the linked article? It's not about better, it's about making it accurate.

Interesting. Makes you wonder what other things are missing in an emulated game that normally is there otherwise. Glad to see I have another reason to keep all my old games and systems :D

That read like one Star Trek nerd bragging that his 1/32 scale replica of the USS Enterprise -D was better than every other nerds 1/32 scale replica of the USS Enterprise-D because his fully-functional turbolift transits from Ten-Forward to the bridge in exactly 4.51762895 seconds and everyone else's does it in 4.518 seconds, but his replica will never be perfect because the proper material for the carpeting in Riker's quarters hasn't been invented yet.

well no because the exactness is the only way the emulator can really work. the cheating emulators that worked on popular games sometimes were patched specifically to cheat their way into working on popular games, an emulator is no good if you aren't sure it won't freeze on the last level of a game. that is more a demo emulator than a true emulator.

That article is written by the guy who makes bsnes and a lot of it seems like a rehash of what he already has on his website. Personally, I've tried bsnes and after a few trials I went back SNES9X. It's too damn inefficient for me to want to use and in this article he seems to rehash the same old game specific glitches that he did on his website God knows how long ago. Yeah I get it, if I play Link to the Past the opening logo won't turn at the correct speed but at least I can run the game using my brand new $1800 laptop with SNES9X or ZSNES.

Even more annoying is his damn pedantism with file formats. His program can use pretty much all the rom formats that are out there but he insists on only supporting one kind (which I never seem to get). So he makes you run a converter to convert all your roms to his single format.

After reading his website and wrangling with his emulator I have to admit, sactoking seems to have hit on the head with this one.

I am so glad I just swallowed my drink before I read this or it would've been all over my monitor at work. Well done, sir! :D

I was going to say I read that article several months ago, but I saw the date posted was a few days ago so I didn't quite know what was going on. Zsnes is good enough for me personally.
