I have a Coleman Powermate 2750 with a Honda engine... rarely used it....last week, i pulled the starter cord a bit hard, now it's stuck and won't recoil. The recoil starter probably needs replaced.

anyway, i called Lowes extended support, and they said that Coleman filed bankruptcy and I may not be able to find replacement parts..... wth??? he asked me to call the General Manager of the Lowes I bought it from to see if they can do anything....

I think I'm screwed here... can I sell this and make a few hundred? i'll give Lowes a call tomorrow first to see what they say.....

That's an easy fix...just pull the recoil cord assembly off and see what's busted. Shouldn't be that bad.

If you don't already have screwdrivers, perhaps you should find a mechanically-inclined friend? :p

Best of luck to you- just keep an eye out for little springs. They tend to depart rather speedily. :)

If it's what I picturing, then the starter cord assembly is mounted right on top with 3 screws. Just pull those off. Usually if the cord does not retract, the spring is busted or maybe the pull catch is hung up. You should be able to get a replacement part for it even if Coleman is out of business. They don't make the engines...It's probably a Briggs and Stratton perhaps. Either way, I know you can easily find replacement parts. Try a lawnmower shop. They'd have what you need.

I'm going to guess that it's a Honda engine.

I have a Troy Bilt power washer with a Honda engine.....I'd bet a few bucks that it's the same engine. Someone will have the part you need....it just might not be in a Coleman box.

This shouldn't be a problem at all.

thanks for the info LemonHead.. i just wish it was so simple to remove the recoil assembly... it's in a tight spot and not so easy to get to...
http://www.pressurewashersdire...s.php?products_id=1232

i took it to a shop that specializes in lawn/garden repair and they wanted ~$140 to fix... eff that. i'll probably throw it on craigslist if i can't get anything going with it..

That is what I was thinking. The Honda engines are pretty standard. Just get the model number off of the engine and go to the local small engine/lawnmower repair facility and they should be able to get the part for you....probably right off the shelf.

'Easy to get to' is a relative phrase. This is what's in my barn now..from my experience, if you take enough stuff apart, almost anything is easy to get to! :p

Seriously, though...will you be able to replace it for 140 bucks? The site you listed has a price of $1k- sounds like it'd be worth fixing, even if you have to pay someone to do it.

Since you called Lowe's extended support, am I to believe it's still under some warranty? You should still be able to get it repaired, and Lowe's is full of shit if they tell you the parts are no longer available just because some company filed for bankruptcy.

Re: starter cords - I've dealt with two; neither on a Honda engine. They can be a major pita to get back together right; two sets of hands helps.

Coleman/Powermate are responsible for warranty work. Not Lowe. Contacting Coleman would be a good start.

how about this?

What he said.

You just talked to the wrong person... and apparently not angry enough (when they told you that they couldn't do anything). Call them back. Demand to talk to the most important person there and demand service.

Hopefully you still have the receipt. Lowes (and HD and Walmart and Costco and all the other huge warehouse stores) have absurd return policies. If they keep hassling you load it up in the car and bring it back and get it exchange or get a refund.

Just be persistent. If they say they can't just ask for someone higher up. Go to their website and print off their return policy and bring it with.

I have a friend who works at a home depot. About a month or so ago a guy returned a used broken toilet seat. It was 4 year old. Got his money back.

Number1, thanks for the link! Just what I needed... not sure why my Google searches didn't pull this one up. Anyway, I had thought Powermate was just one of Coleman's many brands.... guess not.

"OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Power equipment manufacturer Powermate Corp. has filed for bankruptcy and announced plans to close its Kearney plant, eliminating about 200 jobs.

Powermate said in its U.S. bankruptcy court filing Monday that it owes between $50 million and $100 million to creditors, most of which are suppliers. The company is seeking Chapter 11 protection.

Op, you will also find the parts you need at that site, *IF* you even need them. First, hose it down with WD40, try sticking a screwdriver between the vents and move it. If that fails, then slowly disassemble, it really isn't rocket science.
P.S. It seems to me, that when it comes to buying tools, you put the cart in front of the horse.
