Journalists are giving a slanted and unduly negative account of events in Iraq, a bipartisan congressional group that has just returned from a three-day House Armed Services Committee visit to assess stabilization efforts and the condition of U.S. troops said.

Lawmakers charged that reporters rarely stray from Baghdad and have a ?police-blotter? mindset that results in terror attacks, deaths and injuries displacing accounts of progress in other areas.

Comparisons with Vietnam were farfetched, members said.

Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), the committee?s ranking member, said, ?The media stresses the wounds, the injuries, and the deaths, as they should, but for instance in Northern Iraq, Gen. [Dave] Petraeus has 3,100 projects ? from soccer fields to schools to refineries ? all good stuff and that isn?t being reported.?

Skelton and other Democrats on the trip said they plan to reach out to all members of their caucus and explain what they observed.

Rebuilding schools and hospitals isnt news, its what we expect our forces to do there and doesnt sell papers, dead soldiers sell papers, just a bonus for the liberal media that it also gives them another chance to take a shot at the GOP....

Do you have any idea how many "urban" programs are at work every day trying to improve the lives of people in American cities? I doubt it but I'm willing to wager you know who got shot yesterday.

As for Iraq, I wonder how often they reported the primary reason Iraqis did not starve during the early war aftermath was b/c Saddam gave them triple rations? Do you have any idea what the civilian death toll was during or after major combat?

The press is slanted and incompetent but the bias favors America . . . well the American press at least.

Couldn't help but notice that you just replied with (what you consider to be) a witty remark, instead of actually disputing the message in Alistar7's post.

Well, he made some good points up until the liberal media part. In reality, his argument was just too much for me...so I'm going to stick with the "damn liberal media" comment. I stopped arguing with Alistar7 back when he kept telling us to wait for the WMD's and posted link after link after link showing why they would be found. Still waiting on those...:p

Let's try to wave that flag just a little bit harder, people. ;)

Sure! :D I'd much rather see a flag waving in these forums than all the pitchfork waving.;)

Yes! Who cares about what each stand for?!

No questions, guys, just wave the flag. American might is right.

Excuse me, shouldn't the Press be reporting about American (and other) Lives being lost there and the instability in the population centers of Iraq? What would you have them do, ignore these setbacks and concentrate of Soccer Games in Northern Iraq between Kurds and Turkmen?

Someone here thinks that is the only type of news that should be reported...

It's all rainbows and gum drops over in Iraq....didn't you know? Oh wait...of course not..it's that damn liberal media! :p ;)

Edit:

On a serious note, I think the positive news out of Iraq is not reported on as much as maybe it should be, but the fact is most people aren't really interested in the latest new plan and action over in Iraq when our soldiers are dying...

I guess if one would want to put a positive spin on our occupation they could report on all that Happy Sh!t but I seriously doubt that it would interest the vast majority of viewers or readers.

The US media really should take a page from Pravda and Isvestia back in the good old days.

Actually I think you are wrong - most people would love to hear progress reports and some of the good things that are coming out of Iraq. Isn't that what you people are clammoring for? - proof of progress? People get sick of ONLY hearing about the attacks on our troops, and I think some news of the progress being made is more than overdue.

ELP - It's fine to question - heck I got questions too, but to constantly badger and accuse/demonize doesn't help in getting those questions answered...does it? Won't you just dismiss what they say anyway - that seems to be the norm around here.

I'm more interested in proof to justify being there, instead of proof of progress in rebuilding what we destroyed. :)

And people SHOULD get sick when they hear of our troops dying or getting wounded- those soldiers are our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. Especially when we're not even sure we should be there.

the press only exists to create controversy, and they'll bend over backwards to find it.

20.3 Billion $$$ - Iraq Spending Plan (From FOX)

This will greatly improve the Iraqi public : $9 million to modernize Iraq's postal system, including establishment of ZIP codes.

I can hardly wait to see the benefit of that !
------------------------------------------------------------------------
$30 million to provide half-day classes in English for 5,000 workers.

$30 Million devided by 5,000 is only $ 6,000 per person for a half day class, but for how long ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can bet that Brown & Root (Haliburton) will be getting 90% of this allocation of money.

Cad, how soon you forget. A great many of us never wanted to go to Iraq to begin with. Now that we've seen how little evidence of actual threats existed in Iraq, those same people feel we're occupying Iraq under false pretenses. Personally, I'm sick of hearing about it too, but until we get our arses out of there, I'm afraid we're stuck having to hear about soldiers getting picked off. And NO I'm not suggesting that we pull up stakes now and depart; unfortunately, Bush has us stuck there for the duration. Just don't expect everyone to go waving the flag, Cad, it's simply not going to happen.

 - Who said anything about forgetting something? I know you people don't think we should be there, but we are there now- you can't change that. Now why is it only the "bad" news you guys post about? Why do "you" dismiss any progress that gets posted as flag waving?

I know the reason progress is summarily dismissed around here- and so do you. It's quite apparant by looking at the type of threads that are posted.
