PSU brand- Aspire (Apevia now??)
Mdl# ATX-AS500w
Age- 3 years

Wife's pc just died. I have a feeling it's the PSU. She pressed the power button luckily while I was in the room and it made a loud "POP" as it was pressed!

I can see a small piece of a black chip floating around in the PSU.

I've already ordered a new Antec , but my question is..............

What are the chances that some of the other components aren't Fried?

It's an Aspire/Apevia PSU so basically there's a very very good chance that PSU took out other components. I had an Aspire PSU that killed 6 hard drive over a period of two months. Those Apevias/Aspire are pure shit:

I really hope it's just the power supply. I had an old Enermax and Antec that died on me in the past........ and that's all it was, just the psu. (crosses fingers)

If you got a meter I would set it to ohms and test the hard drive, etc with a quick test.
Just measure between the pos & neg of each device, with no power running of course :)

That will prevent plugging in a new power supply only to have something connected that is already shortened.

... never gonna give you up? (Sorry, had to do it :p)

As for the PSU, I wouldn't be surprised if the motherboard died or the HD. I've repaired too many systems with lower-end PSUs that died that way.

Well good news!

Just got my Antec 550 (awesome reviews at the egg for $55.) in and installed it.............. Everything's fine
Oh, and 2 days to ship from NewEGG!

The only reason I had that crappy psu, was that it came with the case. Won't make that mistake again, trust me!

Not all PSUs that come with cases are crappy, but good case/PSU bundles are rare besides Antec. Antec has many units in the past two years bundled with EarthWatts power supplies which are pretty decent, and even some of their Titan server chassis come with TruePower Trio.

Well my current case has the 500 Antec Smartpower 2.0, is this decent? (It was 2 years old this past mth)

First off, the SmartPower 2.0 is probably a lot better than the Aspire/Apevia. However, it is not as good as premium units, because it was intended to be Antec's lower end line. Earlier units had Fujyuu capacitors that tended to fail in short order (within a few years). If the capacitors hold together, then it should be okay for a lower end but decent unit.

It's decent when it's running but like Zap said, those Smartpowers had a somewhat high failure rate. Listen closely to the PSU while it's running and when it's off. If you hear a squealing sound, even when the PSU/System is off, time for a RMA. Antec will give you the better quality EA500 500W PSU in return

Also, another lesson: Take Newegg reviews on PSUs with a huge grain of salt. The vast majority of PSU reviews written on newegg are by noobs, ill-informed or outright dumb people. Just take a look at the "glowing" reviews of Apevia PSUs and compare those to the ones I linked to. Big difference in quality and information.

Will definately take this into account. But the Antec is going into a 3 yr old computer. I just thought it would last at least two more years and then toss it. The Apevia lasted a little over 3 years.

Thanks guys.
