Press F6 to install any SATA Drivers?Intel 965 chipset

When setting up Windowss XP on an Intel 965 chipset board do you need to press F6 to install any SATA Drivers? I know you do not have to do that for Nforce 4 boards.

I had to do this for a Nforce2 board the other day. I dont see why it would not be the case for Nforce4. XP has no SATA controller drivers that I know of.

I have an Nforce 4 motherboard and I do not need to press F6 to install SATA drivers.

Many onboard SATA controllers will emulate an IDE controller and not need any special drivers to run non-RAIDed drives. They will use the built-in Windows IDE drivers. Just be sure that the BIOS drive controller settings are NOT set for RAID.

The NForce4 incorporates it's first four SATA ports right into the chipset, and Windows recognizes that as an ATA device. I suspect this is the case with all modern chipsets, including the 965. Keep in mind, both PATA devices like IDE and SATA devices use the same ATA addressing protocol. It's not so much "emulation" as it is simply bare-bones support.

Once you install Windows, it would be best to install the real chipset drivers to add complete support for your SATA controller in order to use all functions correctly.

I had to press F6 for my Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Intel P965+ ICH8 chipset). (My drives were in the purple ports, though)

The purple ports belong to an add-on controller made by Gigabyte.

The orange ports are built into the ICH8 southbridge, and probably do not need drivers loaded through F6.
