He has time off. Maybe more. It will be discussed by the mods.

I saw this posted in an off-topic thread:

This is a WARNING to everyone given the privelege of posting here:

**************************
ANYONE issuing a threat against the life of the President of the United States, no matter how veiled, will be booted from these forums for a length commensurate with their threat and reported to the Secret Service.

I applaud this, and suggest it be added to the rules in P&N.

Another suggestion, it shouldn't be limited to the president, but instead extended to any elected official. Reserve the Secret Service reporting for any national office. Just my $.02

Logically, it should extend to 'any' (not just elected officials and forum members), unless it's only a legal liability issue.

Indeed we did. If someone threatened to shoot Bush I would have acted as would have other moderators.

People have said that Bush ought to be punished, but that's an abstraction.

In a nutshell

"Johnny is a SOB. He should be run over by a bus"

Is NOT

"Johnny is a SOB. I'm going to run him over with a bus"

The second is a direct threat and not allowed.

I can attest that I would have sent someone packing if they were foolish and stupid to post a threat against Bush even though I think he's the worse thing to happen to America in my life.

Posting as a member not as a Moderator

I am and was no fan of Bush, but as a moderator I DID lock, warn or ban posters more than once for crossing this line during the last 8 years.

Perhaps it's because I'm new around here, but seriously, there have been idiots making threats like that?

Why don't you just add as a rule,

"Anyone issuing a threat against the life of an individual will be booted from these forums"

It's makes the matter more broad and a bit more easier to digest for us Non-Americans. And PLEASE do not mention the "secret service" anywhere in an official rule. I like AT and I know you are US-based, but try to keep the political associations as minimal as possible ?

Please?

While I can see where you are coming from, the secret service in itself is not a political association. For a forum that falls under US jurisdiction, the only recourse against such threats is to report them to the appropriate US authority.

By definition, you are right. The SS is not affiliated to any party. But, what I'm trying to point out, is that as far as non-Americans go, the SS is US-affiliated. I mean it won't go out of it's way to protect the Japanese PM now, right?

I'm not saying/suggesting to dis-obey the law. I'm sure most educated members of AT know it's US-based. So we can expect it to function accordingly. BUT, if it's mentioned as part of the official rules of the site (terms like SS, FBI ... etc), it gives out the feeling that AT is more strongly US-biased and that opinions that don't go along with the US are not encouraged. Which, from my experience is not the case.

Also, I draw a distinction between "opinions that don't go along with the US" and "anti-US".

This post is now bordering on Politics. But, I do hope that I've made my point ?

Actually the Secret Service may be designated to protect the Japanese PM if he were to visit to United States, so referring threats to them is akin to referring threats to the authority's whose jurisdiction covers AnandTech. This seems to make logical sense because anything reported to, say, a Pakistani security apparatus, wouldn't really make sense for a website based out of the United States. Your basis for complaint here seems to be nothing more than hurt feelings, and although I don't see that in itself as valid I also do not see why this would at all make someone think opinions that don't go along with the U.S. aren't accepted.

You make a good point Farang. Perhaps it IS a case of feelings in my case, as I'm not American. That assumption is re-enforced by the fact that no-one else seems to be making a post in my favor.

It's been a few days, and I've cooled down. I think I'm just a tad bit paranoid when I see an agencies name (FBI, CIA, MI6, KGB ...etc). Watching too many spy flicks, perhaps?

Cheers!
