Presidential Iraq Briefing 4-13-2004 8:30 PM - Official discussion here

It helped to cut down on the amount of Condi Rice threads last week, hopefully same can occur on commentary and discussion of tonights' briefing to the Nation on Iraq.

hehe condi rice turned to Fried Rice during the hearing. This report is damning for Cheney as he was head of national security and as reported by Treasury Secretary O'Niell and Counter Terrorism Expert Clarke, they completley ignored Al Queda and were OBSESSED with Saddam. The title and CONCLUSION of the briefing say it all, it wasn't a history lesson if Bush had the attention span to read all the way to the bottom and see what the conclusion was.

My prediction:

This is Bush's opportunity to start the "drumbeat" for withdrawal. How? Well its obviously a mess right now, and just stating plainly that we're leaving soon will cause a huge backlash. So Bush will start the "blame Iraqis" route -- one that's already being echoed here by some members (see the Iraqi kidnapping thread).

"We came in to liberate them and bring them freedom from their tyrannical dictator. But they are rebelling against us and this is disheartening. We came in with good intentions and they want none of it...." blah blah blah

A few weeks later as June 30 gets closer and the violence gets even worse, here at home the public will start to grow weary, and there will be Dubya saying "Well we tried but they don't want us there." The public will agree with Dubya, he'll declare victory because we trounced Saddam a year ago, and we leave Iraq to chaos, civil war, and an ultimately Islamist tyranny. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Dubya will enjoy high popularity ratings by being the guy who tried to do the right thing but those damn Iraqis wouldn't let him. He'll win in November and the cycle will repeat itself in some way and some form. And we won't be any safer.

Just watch.

Nothing could probely be farther from the truth. The Last thing the US wants in Iraq Know is a Fundamental Islamic Tyranny. Our Countries National Security and Access to Oil Would Be at stake. Bush MUST stay the Course. He Chose this to Get the Us into this Mess and Now must pay the price even if it means No Second Term.

I do Predict that the Handover to the Iraqi's will be Postponed Six months Due To instability though.

I hope he gets more pre-determined softball questions like "How has your faith gotten you through this time?"

The reporters and their softball questions have already been preapproved. The script of the entire thing is being written right now.

We wont leave that Oil there.... That was the real "Economic Policy" The "Tax Cut" and the "Stock Dividend Cut" couldnt make a dent in a Aluminum Can.... We need cheap fuel/energy/material .... now that could get a economy going... Can you imagine how much money I would save if the price of gas was $1.50 vs what I pay now? I figure I would save about $50 a month....... Toss in the rest like lower energy costs... cheaper goods due to lower costs for plastics and with a moving economy lower overall prices for goods period. Now that is a plan! Oh...... I guess Bush decided to use a different story..... Oh well.....

We should turn the briefing into a drinking game :p:beer:

Every time Bush says, "... (they) hate freedom ..." - drink 1 shot.

Every time he says, "There was no warning, no mention of time or place ..." - chug one beer.

Every time he says, "... evil mastermind ..." - beer bong.

Bush will mention that insurgents are terrorists (further trying to blend those distinct lines).
Bush will mention the upcoming withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as if he had a lot to do with it.
Bush will mention additional troops have been requested to fight the uprising insurgents and that our troops are performing admirably.
Bush will mention the war on terror is ongoing and the hunt for bin Laden and his Al Qaeda leaders is still underway and that Pakistan is a great asset in that battle.
Bush will mention Paul Bremer has been a great asset to establishing democracy in Iraq as an example to the rest of the Middle East.
Bush will briefly mention the 9/11 Commission hearings with a little blurb about the Aug. 6 memo and how he would have done anything to prevent the 9/11 attacks.
Bush will bring up the continued search for either weapons of mass destruction or the search for proof that Saddam was wanting to reestablish programs for WMDs (neither of which exist.)
Bush will also mention that our economy is growing strongly. This, despite the fact that the consumer share of the rise in the economy is barely on the radar. It's mostly coroporate profit as the increase in jobs is from part-time and lower-paying full-time jobs.

Bush will NOT mention that the British are becoming increasingly critical of the U.S. forces' methods of attack that result in civilians casualties.
Bush will NOT mention lack of ammunition our forces faced in trying to battle the uprising in Fallujah.
Bush will NOT mention that troops that were on the way home from already extended tours of duty were turned around back to Iraq.

In other words, Bush will try to paint a rosy picture of the U.S. economy, the war on Iraq, and the war on terror (oh wait...those last two are the same thing

DealMonkey, I'm going to need at least that amount of sedation just to sit through this thing. I think your rule list can be supplemented as indicated by Conjur. We might need some Dexedrine and other drugs so we're not all passed out by the end tho. Maybe every time the he blinks repeatedly while fumbling a pre-approved question the rules tell you to pop some reds.

Good point:

Everytime Bush makes inappropriate facial expressions --> Pop 1 pain killer.

I fully expect him to smirk at inappropriate times, for example, just after he mentions that 70 coalition soldiers, mostly Americans, had been killed in Iraq during April alone. I fully expect to be loaded by the end of the briefing. ;)

Hey, I have an idea - lets actually have some discussion when it airs instead of blowing alot of hot partisan air before hand? Ah...but that would ruin a perfectly good pre-airing rant by the Bush-haters now wouldn't it.;)

I suppose it you're right. It can't compete with the spin we get from the anti-Bushies here so lets forget about actually watching it...
