What's the point of presidential pardons? To put the president in a more angelic light?
Why are some people given leniency when there are thousands more in the same position? How does one even get into the running to be pardoned?

These questions were brought to by the letter W and the number 42.

so he got convicted for the phone part but not the narcotics felony?

I don't know the specifics of the case but that is possible. Or the telephone conviction carried a higher penalty than the narcotics conviction and pardoning the one got him sprung from prison.

It's his power to do so under the Constitution. It's in the Constitution as a check of judicial power by the executive branch.

That's it in a nutshell. IMO the power is terribly abused and needs to be either removed from the Constitution or altered enough that it's not just a huge scam.
