President Signs Bill That Allows Gun-Slinging AMTRAK Passengers to be Locked in Boxes

Earlier this week, Congress sent the president a massive spending bill that funded dozens of federal departments. Tucked into the transportation section of the legislation are safety requirements for AMTRAK customers who carry firearms on board the government-backed train system. The bill Congress passed mandates that passengers with firearms declare they have weapons with them in advance and stow them in locked boxes while on the train.

The bill text was correct when the House approved the legislation last week and the Senate followed suit Sunday. But somewhere in between, the language that referred to putting the guns in locked boxes morphed into stuffing “passengers” into locked boxes.

Aides to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) became aware of the problem Wednesday night as the House voted on its final slate of bills for the year. Pelosi’s staff tried to negotiate with Republican aides to see if they would agree to change the text of the bill without revoting the entire piece of legislation. But it was all for naught as Mr. Obama had already signed the measure into law.

Congress passes a law requiring passengers to be locked up in boxes and you don't find that even slightly amusing? Dang, liberals really don't have a sense of humor. Try imagining those passengers are Republican bankers in suits. Anything now? How about if the locked boxes have a big red sign that says "WARNING! ARMED PASSENGERS: DO NOT OPEN EXCEPT IN CASE OF ARMED ATTACK"? Nothing? Try imagining that the Republicans controlled Congress and Bush signed it into law.

Okay, how about if one of those passengers farts in the locked box? (I'm trying to find your level, dude, work with me here!)

Am I the only one that thinks there should be at least a couple of "proof reads" before something is signed into law? I know the bills are monstrous and not even the Senators/Congressmen read or understand most of the crap they are voting on but come on. The article even mentions a bill under Bush that they forgot a "35 page chunk" that wasn't discovered until they were trying to override Bush's veto.

How many federal employees do we pay for? Can't we have a few hundred that we can give a section of the bill to and have them proof it a few times before it actually becomes law? How many laws, that govern our lives, are on the books right now that are clerical errors?

Why does my Shenanigans-a-foot Meter read Full?

Seems like somebody in the Process is making Headlines.

The best way to cut the pork in government might well be to force every bill and every amendment to be read on the floor of the Senate and the House before voting it up or down, AND not let anyone not on the floor at the time of the reading to vote on it. The language would get much more concise and precise, Congress would presumably know exactly what they were approving, and a lot of pork would get cut out just to avoid hearing it read out loud (or to avoid missing that 6AM tee time.)

Obviously the language will quickly be amended, or they'd face having the legislation negated by court decision. However, given the nature of Amtrak I expect to see rapid lawsuits against even the corrected version of the legislation, and would give them fairly good odds at success.

Just more wasted dollars by people who refuse to acknowledge reality.

That is spot on.

All of the Liberals made fun of the "tea baggers" when they yelled "read the bill".

I wonder home many other gems we would find if someone actually went back and read all of the legislation ever passed.

Probably a lot. My favorite was when someone refused to waive reading the bill and they had to hold up the vote for hours because it hadn't actually been finished yet.

How dare you suggest something that makes perfect sense to any sane person. If you keep this up they might just get mad and quit !

Not only that but it amazes me that the PRESIDENT would sign anything without reading it first.

(I would never put my signature on anything without reading it first)

What's even worse is Bush saying he thinks something is unconstitutional, then signing it anyway. The President is always the first line of defense for bad laws.

I wish Congress would take one day a week and just debate and vote on dismantling bad or outdated laws and failed programs.

Joe Biden assured us Amtrak is a national treasure!

Uh, gee whiz, the last vestige of what once was the world's best passenger rail system, and arguably the most efficient mode of national transportation infrastructure?

Flippant much?

I don't see the problem. I'm sure the boxes will have air holes, along with bedding, lettuce and a water bottle....

For some reason that made me laugh very hard.

I have this vision in my head of a man in a three piece suit climbing into a box so equipped and muttering "I swear to G-d, next time I'm voting Republican."
