<< Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race >>

yep, the islamic oil nations have an historic window of opportunity that they are pissing away. if they keep it up, historically speaking, they won't amount to more than a footnote or a few paragraphs assigning them as the focus of political turmoil during a brief period of time. in the end, for all their achieved wealth, they will amount to nothing.

I wonder what the response from the citizens of countries in South Asia was to these words?

The truth probably hurts...

That is interesting... I hope that this serves as a wake-up call for some people... But I'm not holding my breath...

The mullahs are probably drafting a fatwah calling for his death as we speak. Courageous words to be sure, and from someone credible enough in the Muslim world to perhaps stick. Seems like Pakistan has gotten a bit of a wakeup call itself.... i can't see Musharraf having uttered these words absent the events of 9-11. Sometimes the sheer enormity of certain events make people realize exactly how screwed up their worldview prior to them taking place... we may be witnessing that coming to fruition in Musharraf.

Wonder if Musharraf has been reading anything by Salman Rushdie lately? ;)

Does anyone else find it ironic that Musharraf is talking about the need to stop being backward when he ascended to power in a military coup? ;)

no its not all that ironic. not all places should have democracy, if you haven't reached a certain level of education/develpment it becomes silly. in fact i thnk one place had one and the ppl voted democracy out in favor of islamic rule. ignorant ppl are %#@ dangerous, but its nice knowing theres a leader with balls out there. if we flip flop on our support for pakistan now we're idiots.

Muslim nations are internally involved in fratricidal conflicts and perceived by the outside world as terrorists with little attention being given on their uplift, he said.

He should have added that the outside world view the Muslim nations as gun toting thugs.

President Musharraf said the time had come for Islamic nations to take part in collective self-criticism.

collective self-criticism will never happen. The muslims view everything as the will of Allah. If they criticize something then they are criticizing the will of Allah.

"Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race," he told

Very brave words. I congradualte Musharraf on his bravery and willinginess to try to pull the muslim nations out of the stone age.

You're making the entirely rash assumption that Musharraf has all the support domestically that he needs.

He doesn't...he lacks a lot of support in his own country and in the Muslim world as a whole...
