Taken from my local newspaper:

Failure to find weapons of mass destruction, lengthy deployments and proposed cuts in veterans' benefits are working against the president.

WASHINGTON- When the Bush campaign asked James McKinnon to co-chair its veterans steering committee in New Hampshire- a job he held in 2000- the 56 year old Vietnam veteran respectfully, but firmly said no.

I basically told then I was disappointed in his support of veterans," said McKinnon, who served two tours in Vietnam with the Coast Guard. "He's killing the active-duty military... Look at the reserves call-ups for Iraq, the hardships. The National Guard- the state militia- is being used improperly. I took the president at his word on Iraq, and now you can't find a single report to back up or substantiate weapons of mass destruction.

In the 2000 presidental election, absebtee military ballots from oversees helped to deliver the narrow margin of victory that sent Bush into the White House. So even a small defection of current and retired military people and their dependents could spell trouble for Bush in 2004.

------------------------------------------------------

My father who served in the Korean war hates Bush and he has convinced his army buddies to vote against the president. I just want to thank the Bush administration and the Republican congress for wanting to cut veterans' benefits. My father and his buddies really appreciate it.

Thank god my father told me to stay the hell out of the US military. :|

I sure hope your father lives in Florida or donates money to political campaigns, cus NJ is just not going to be a battleground state. Kinda like CA. The only way I can influence this election is by giving money.

Bush just needs to take a trip to the VA hospitals and clinics and listen. Ouchee! Some of these guys are really PISSED OFF. I'm going tomorrow for some more tests and should get an ear full. Last week two guys really got into it. One guy, a lifelong Republican, was complaining it was going to be just like 'Nam all over again if we didn't support Bush. The really old guy in a wheelchair he was arguing with was having none of it.

The veterans are definitely divided over this war, but it seems the 'Nam vets are particularly vocal.

And, at my Saturday weight workout with some of my buddies two of the folks really got into it. Actually, it was a totally crazy salesman and a female nurse. The nurse hates Bush and I thought she was going to clobber the salesman. The salesman called her a "fusking commie". Bwuahahaha! Most of us laughed but she stormed out. The guys love to fight, but the ladies think we are too stupid.... :)

A commie because the nurse doesn't like Bush? Oh man.. I would have told that POS guy off, because in America I can critize anyone I damn well please. Also, I would love to see my father's reaction to being called a commie because he can't stand our president. My father would have punched this guy in the mouth for calling him a commie.

I'm against Bush but I'm about as far from a commie as you can get. Commies are statists, not all non-Bush supports are statists, in fact quite the opposite.

Well like they say don't beleive everything you read, In the Indy VA I haven't seen the President losing support but I have seen hardcore Dems. coming over to support Bush over Kerry, The VA is better than it use to be but it still sucks and always will unless you live in Ill. or Longbeach, Most likely the two best VA hospitals there is
