AFAIK he didn't actually landed the plane on the carrier, the pilot did that
I didn't find it in this link, but I'm sure it's there somewhere in others and it's a bit implied in this quote:

As for it being a political stunt, well all presidents get a boost in popularity by going to war and they all get that effect of people saying that people shouldn't challenge presidents when at / near war. I think it's a pathetic fact that this happens at all (go beat up on someone else -- become more popular) , but it's hardly just a matter of Bush or even just our country.
