The president-elect of the Christian Coalition of America has declined the job, saying the organization wouldn't let him expand its agenda beyond opposing abortion and gay marriage.

The Rev. Joel Hunter, who was scheduled to take over the socially conservative group in January from Roberta Combs, said he had hoped to focus on issues such as poverty and the environment.

"These are issues that Jesus would want us to care about," said Hunter, a senior pastor at Northland Church in Longwood, Fla.

Jesus, yes. The Christian Coalition? No.
Which goes to show how morally bankrupt the Christian Coalition is.

Good for him! This is a nice example to illustrate the idea that the coalition is just a bunch of right wing nuts as opposed to real christians.

"They pretty much said,

'These issues are fine, but they're not our issues, that's not our base,'" Hunter said.

Exactly, it's a base of extremist fundamental whackos, many of which post on here sadly.

What, you mean Jesus doesn't consider the "radical homosexual agenda", the war on christmas, activist judges, and teaching intelligent design in science class to be the most pressing issues in our society?

:Q

Color me surprised.

Sadly, people like Rev. Joel Hunter are all too frequently drowned out by the likes of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and Ralph Reed -- people who make the rest of us go "wtf" when we think about Evangelicals.

Screw the environment and poverty, keeping gays out of the world is more important to eternal life in the kingdom of heaven and the continuing of our christian world.

LOL, this is like a flashback of the Thanksgiving we just shared with my MIL. She went on and on about the radical homosexual agenda that Target supports, which is why she will only shop at WalMart. My husband brought up the evil that WalMart does but she feels it is more important to keep those queers in their places, 'cause she hates the sin.

She also went on and on about all socialists and communists being atheists. She quoted O'Reilly a lot. Then she said FDR was the worst president in history.

Thank You Jesus I only have to visit her twice a year.....

I don't think I could stand being around someone like that. It would kind of ruin the point of being on holiday to have someone with a sour attitude like that around.

It was hard. But we have worked out a deal where we only spend 24 hours with them twice a year. My husband actually used to be one of them, and then he woke up. So, because I love him, and he loves them, it is something I accept.

But, in general, it is very difficult. I drank a couple of glasses of cognac to make it through. (Which I had stashed in my luggage, of course....)
