President Designates September 11 As Patriot Day

George W. Bush on Wednesday issued a formal proclamation designating September 11 as Patriot Day in honor of the men and women who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The declaration designates 9/11 as a day of remembrance, but not an official federal holiday like Memorial Day.

The president asked that citizens observe the occasion each year with ceremonies, vigils and remembrance services, and said that the U.S. flag should be hung at half-staff that day.

Bush also asked people and organizations around the country to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time, the time the first hijacked airplane struck the north tower of the World Trade Center.

?We found healing in the national outpouring of compassion for those lost, as tens of millions of Americans participated in moments of silence, candlelight vigils, and religious services," the president said. "From the tragedy of September 11 emerged a stronger nation, renewed by a spirit of national pride and a true love of country."

The U.S. Congress had approved a joint resolution in December authorizing the president to designate September 11 of each year as Patriot Day.

There have also been calls to have September 11 made an official federal holiday like Labor Day, during which government offices and schools are closed

This is clearer biased towards last years super bowl winners, the new england patriots.

Well all know it should've been Eagles day.

Anyways, Im kidding. Glad to see it's being remembered, i hope it becomes a holiday so everybody can reflect.

I also think it should not be a holiday...seriously, would you go to Bestbuy's "WTC sale"

In addittion, holidays are usually regarded with joy..ie july 4th, Christmas, Martin Luther king Day...

There is really no way of making this a happy and festive day due to the respect the day deserves. The country DID unite, but then again, we can't just play off the 2800victims can we....

Finally, I see many people are regarding this event as something worse and more world-changing than the attack on Pearl Habor.

Although I realize this was an attck on civilians, the attack was more groundbraking at Pearl harbor because of all the things it changed:

Ex:
-Women in the workforce
-Industrailization(even moreso)

Even so, this last tragedy was by far the most televised and watched terrorist action in history...a few hundred thousand on the ground and billions watching on tv..not to metion the radio listeners(Osama B.L.:|)..THat is why many considerate worse, without thinking about how bad Pearl Harbor was

In 15 minutes a day of rememberance will take place, not a day of joy.

C'mon, what did you expect? They day held more significance as a date; adding the cheesy name "Patriot Day" just makes it marketable.

I agree. I dont like it, but so long as it isnt made a national holiday its ok. Isnt it enough that they shut down business once already? To do it each year at the same time would be like letting them do over and over again.
