it's funny to look back on.

my sophomore year of college (fall '00), I had a sociology teacher who I really respected. she had just moved to PA from Texas right before the semester began, and she had lived in Texas during GWB's tenure.

this lady was only slightly to the right of Marx and had nothing but good things to say about Governor Bush, and it was partly because of her influence that I voted for Bush in 2000.

it's amazing how a person can change... I always wonder if this is the real GWB and 9/11 / the war on terror just gave him all the excuses he needed or if he really does believe in the things that he does.

Texas is probably the weakest governor state in the US. The Governor of Texas can't really do much other than be a figurehead. The Lt. Governor has much greater power under the old reconstruction era constitution.

Bush did actually talk more to people while he was Gov, but he did show the pit bull stubborness that sometimes still passes for decisiveness. He was nowhere near as bad a governor as he's been as a president. I think it is the advsiors who surround him that made the biggest difference.

That and the fact that he wouldn't listen to some of his better advisors, always seemed to take the wrong advice.

And here stupid me, free association and all, who thought this thread might be about that other specter, Jeb Bush.

But I agree, the Texas Governor slot is then perfect safe position to groom a politician. Four years experience doing nothing.

I LOL'd at that...quite a contrast between what he said when he was trying to get elected and what he has actually done...

We have heard little about Jeb since he left office. And Jeb has supposedly ruled out running for Pres. Even though the Repubs have one moderate in the Presidential race in Giuliani, it now looks like Bernie Kerik may derail the Giuliani bandwagon.

Although I am now Jeb fan, Jeb is the only Republican Moderate I can think of that might be viable enough to enter the GOP Presidential race at this late date in the event Giuliani becomes non-viable. Jeb could even duck the primaries and maybe be drafted in a possible deadlocked Republican convention.

yup. i wonder if condi has changed as well? her policy docs back in the late 90s were about staying out of conflicts, etc, like shrub at the time. and colin powell thought the first iraq war was wrong.

have to wonder if shrub changed, or whether he was concealing it all along. and if he did change, was it due to pressure from other people in the admin or did he do some soul-searching and come to that conclusion himself?

Bush was a good governor. He let us carry guns in church.

Yep, consistent with the Nebor philosophy on other threads, its somehow possible to go to a church where God dwells and shoot God dead.

Thereby disillusioning all your fellow pensioners who are eye witnesses to the assassination.
Living proof that God is dead.
