President Bush thinks there will be peace in ME by time he leaves office

On his visit to the ME, President Bush has stated:

"And I'm convinced they will. And I believe it's possible - not only possible, I believe it's going to happen - that there be a signed peace treaty by the time I leave office (in January 2009)."

Will these be known as his "famous last words" as a President or does he actually have a chance at making this happen?

Personally, I believe it is premature to make such a statement given the facts on the ground: Israel is ramping up settlement construction and they are only dealing with a faction of the Palestinian people represented by Abbas. If you remember, the people voted for Hamas, and Israel and US continues to refuse to deal with Hamas. But wether they like it or not, in order for a peace deal to happen they have to deal with Hamas. Abbas is considered by many to be more interested in personal advancement than the advancement of the people he is supposed to represent.

But I'm willing to give Bush a chance and see what his plan is. It's good that he is so optimistic about it.

Anyone still think this guy has all his marbles? I can't believe he duped enough people to reelect him.

He clearly made this comment after becoming emotionally overwhelmed when receiving the 'Wed Wose' and seeing the young Israleli girls dance to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' ...

This was such a contrived PR moment it may replace 'Mission Accomplished' in The Bush Hall of Shame

The GWB weasel words are---"And I'm convinced they will. And I believe it's possible - not only possible, I believe it's going to happen - that there be a signed peace treaty by the time I leave office (in January 2009)."

I too am convinced that a signed agreement is possible before GWB leaves office.

What I can't get my arms around is what remote relationship such a signed agreement would have with any kind of lasting mid-east peace.

We all wish for it---the point being, you can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit like GWB
is trying to do. No matter how hard you wish for it you have to have the peace ingredients
and GWB neglected to bring them along. And whatever rice brought to Israel rotted.

But maybe GWB and Israel can pressure Abbas to ink something by holding a gun to his head. And shortly thereafter the West bank will toss out Abbas and Fatah as they repudiate whatever he signed. But it would fulfill the GWB prophesy of an signed deal.

Lasting peace is not a legacy likely to befall GWB, but cheer up, maybe there will be a near future Nobel prize for being the least effective peace broker GWB might win for a lasting legacy. Thereby proving needed comic relief by both sides.

It is possible.
Don't forget that the US helped engineer a coup in the West Bank and the new dictator owes the US big time.

the only time there will be peace in the M.E. is the period of time between when the atomic bombs go off until the radiation decays away enough for humans to return to the area

Tis not wise to bet on the hare or tortoise, when neither are in the race.

I am not convinced it will happen the way he hopes and visions by then, but I really want it to be true at the same time.

Bill Clinton was saying and trying the same thing before he left.

Maybe if a President started on Middle East peace on day one he might make enough progress over 4 years to really make a difference, but I doubt it.

Peace won't happen until one side decides that is has had enough of waging a war it can't win and tries to make some type of acceptable peace.

Did he state the "in January 2009" part, or was that assumed? He'll have to stay in office for....oh, I'll say at least 150 years, before there's peace in the Middle East. By maybe 50-75 years from now, the oil will be gone, so lots of people won't want to live there anymore. Give it a few more decaedes before nuclear war breaks out there, irradiating the region, making it uninhabitable. Peace.

Or Green Eggs and Ham.:)

Would you bomb them in Iraq?
Would you bomb them with Barack?
Would you start war with Iran?
Would you do it like a con?
Will there be peace in the East?
Methinks you're such a fickle beast.

He also believes:
(promised so far on ME trip)

1) Israel needs $60bil in aid; and
2) Saudi Arabia needs $20bil in aid.

Still to come:

1) Jordan
2) Morocco
3) Bahrain
4) Yemen
5) United Arab Emirates
6) Oman
7) Kuwait
8) Abu Dhabi
9) Dubai

It's hard to determine what the ""aid"" entails but it seems that JDAMs are frequently mentioned ...

Well lets be fair here... what's he supposed to say? If he goes around saying "this hell hole is totally screwed man, get out while you still can" that's not going to do anyone any favors. I am willing to bet that he knows just as well as you or I do that things in the Middle East are screwed.

That was not a jab at Clinton.

I was illustrating the fact that every President tries to get some pact and everyone seems to fail. Waiting until year 7 is not the way to do it, start on day one when you have 4 years ahead of you and can really make some progress.
