Prescriptions during health insurance gap between jobs?

I may be changing jobs. If I do so, I will have a 3 month gap in my heath insurance due to the way the health insurance with the new job works. If I switch, I will buy short-term insurance to cover the gap. But, I currently take 2 prescription medications regularly, both of which are generic, nonschedule drugs. Does anyone know if I change jobs can I go to my doctor and have him write a prescription for a 90-day supply under my current insurance in order to cover the 3-month gap?

It depends on if your insurance will fill 90 day supplies.
Mine does now but it didn't when I first started getting my prescriptions.

COBRA benefits cover Americans in this scenario so ask your employer about them if you cannot get enough supply before hand. You might also try using express scripts if your insurance allows for it to get more on hand now before your coverage expires. The downside to COBRA is that if it isn't augmented by an employer contribution it can be expensive but it will provide insurance in the gap between employers.

First ask your pharmacy what the cost is without insurance. Some generics at big pharmacies (e.g. Walmart or Fred Meyer) are dirt cheap.

Might want to see if the new job will pay for Cobra for the 3 months. That's what a friend of mine did in a similar situation and the employer had no issues doing it.
