What do you guys think of this upcoming processor? Some say its too hot. Some say it'll only reach 3.8ghz. And others say don't waste your money wait for the Tejas.

So what do you guys think?

Personally, I think upgrading from a P3 800 133fsb SSE to a 3.4ghz, 800fsb, SSE3, 1mb L2 is pretty good. Not to mention the SEE3 is what improves hyper-threading and actually utilizes it better, and is more efficient in consuming memory for apps.

We'll see once there's more info about it and some better engineering samples floating around. If you remember, the last time AnandTech had one it was under 3.0 Ghz and they didn't seem too impressed by it since they decided to use the FX51 in their rigs for testing video cards.

I wouldn't waste my money on prescott unless you've got money to burn. It's not going to be a big enough improvement to justify the cost. If you must upgrade, wait for the 2nd generation, which will use a new socket and possibly the btx format and pci-express.

If you MUST do it now, I'd say don't even waste money on a 3.2 Ghz P4... get a 2.6 or 2.8. If you've got money to burn, I'd say get the best you can right now, which is an Athlon-64 FX51. I wouldn't worry about socket 940 being phased out because Opterons will continue to be produced in the 940 pin package so you could always upgrade to a 3 Ghz Opteron down the road. :D

I've considered that, but this will be my last upgrade for years, so I want to get the best, and why waste $200 on a p4 when for $217 I can get a 2.8 Prescott? So, I'll wait till Feb 2nd and get that instead of wasting money for a mid range cpu that will last me a year or so.
