prescott without thermal paste?

when i bought my 2.8ghz prescott (new) it didnt come with thermal paste. is it suppose to? should i buy some thermal paste to increase heat conduction?

I strongly recommend Arctic Silver 5 paste, but it's your call. Can save you up to 10 degrees C or so. I've heard Prescotts run really hot anyhow.

Did you get the retail version? If so, just pop the included HSF on. If your processor gets fried, that Intel's problem and not yours. Just don't expect to OC it any w/ out some thermal paste.

The heatsink that came in the package will (should) have a sticker on the base that is protecting a layer of thermal interface material. If it doesn't, then I am confused.

I think the heatsink will have some waxy looking grey stuff that is supposed to be some phase change thermal transfer layer. Not as good as compound, but better than nothing. FWIW, if you use the included heatsink with the included grey stuff, Intel says it will work at the advertised speed for 3 years.

Yeah but who wants to leave it at that? I say burn the cpu until it bursts into flames or just gets obsolete! I don't trust Intel anyhow. No i'm not a fanboy, I don't trust AMD either but at least their the underdog.

Get some high quality thermal paste and ignore the tape, it doesn't work well from my experience.

The retail HSF with it's TIM pad will be fine as long as you don't intend to set new overclocking records. 😀

Now, if it doesn't have a TIM pad, then you can either fuss about it to the people you bought it from, or put your own stuff on.
