Prescott running too hot?

Hey guys,

I just built a system for a friend couple of min. ago and have yet to install Win XP on it. I was setting up BIOS and noticed that the processor is running very hot. The idle temperature is 60.5C with this heat sink: Thermaltake Jungle512.

System Spec:
Intel Pentium 4 640 3.2 GHz
Asus P5LD2 Deluxe
Hitachi 250GB HD
OCZ PC2 5400 2x512MB
Antec SmartPower 500W
Thermaltake Jungle512 HSF
Abit Radeon X700 PRO 256MB

What could be the problem here? I know prescott runs hotter, but this hot?? Could temperature sensor on motherboard be a problem? I have removed side panel and a 20inch fan blowing directly onto processor and BIOS is still reporting 60.5C. Please let me know if this normal or what I can do to lower the temperature. Should remove that HSF and install stock HSF to see if it makes any difference?

You are using good-quality thermal grease to transfer the heat from the CPU to the heatsink, correct? (edit: maybe it's got a coat pre-installed, now that I look at the photos). And it's definitely fully fastened down at all four corners?

Yes. I am using thermal grease which was already on the HSF. It is fully fastened down at all four corners with all four fasteners turned to lock HSF in position.

I would try the retail HSF next and see what happens.

Thanks. I will try that now. Also, I just noticed that power supply fan in back of the case is not spinning at all. System powers up ok but fan not working. Bad PSU? I think I need to return the PSU to newegg.

Another thing is that air doesn't feel like 60.5C/140F. And MB temp is idle at 34C. But let me try the stock HSF and see what happens.

no, thats part of the PSU's design.

the other fan only spins up when teh temps get high enough to makke it more quiet.

^ Makes sense but BIOS is reporting Power Fan Speed (RPM): 2766RPM. But, as I see, Fan is not spinning at all. How could that be possible?

there are two fans, so its probably jsut reporting the other one

lol, everyone has their dumb moments. anyways, your cpu is running hot, don't keep it on like that or you might damage it.

tt heatsinks aren't the best, try the stock one and see if that helps any.

good luck, presscots do run hot, but expect around 40-50c

It's the core temperature (well, close to it anyways), not the air temperature in the case. Expect your CPU temp to be around 20-30C higher than your case temperature. Probably toward the higher end in your case since it's a Prescott.

Poor temp sensor functions seem sadly common so I would search for user experiences with that particular mobo (perhaps MSI support forum).

Thank you guys for your replies. I am still getting relatively hot temperatures. It is still idling at 60C with stock HSF. I removed the Thermaltake Jungle512, cleaned thermal paste off of CPU with alcohol and put in stock HSF. It is still very hot.

Also, I reset the BIOS by removing the battery and changing the jumper. I am having difficult time setting up SiliconImage RAID as well. No matter how many times I press, CTRL + S or F4 to enter Raid Utility, it just won't enter. I am starting to believe it's the stupid motherboard.

Any more ideas?
