Prescott May be Dead before its launch.

Prescott is in trouble. Not only with heat but even a shift to a smaller Micron process may not get this CPU working properly.

This is abundantly clear and Intel knows it so they are rushing to modify the P4 with a larger cache in order to squeeze out any performance they can until they can correct Prescott's issues.

Dont expect Prescott until Mid 2004.

Opteron sales have already exceeded Athlon XP and Xeon's combined.

Microsoft should have windows 64 available to the public by years end. (I know because I have a copy) :)

So why buy a 32 bit CPU? Prescott is dead.

Granted I also wouldnt be too surprised if the Wintel alliance it about to crumble. I'm sure Bill has not forgotten when Intel stated in court that Microsoft is a Monopoly. Payback is a B****.

Please list all of the 'Present' benefits that 64bit has right now over 32bit.

Advantages of a 64 bit on Opteron.

Simple MARKET ACCEPTANCE OVER INTEL's ITANIUM.

15% peroformance increase in application running in 64 bit mode vs 32 bit mode.

No performance loss in running 32 bit applications on the 64 bit AMD processor.
This provides a much smarter upgrade path than Itanium which runs like a p3 700 when running 32 bit code.

Much cooler running temp compared to Intel based servers which is a plus for data centers.

Microsoft Windows XP for Opteron Q4-03.
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for Opteron Q4-03.
SUN/SOLARIS Accepting and Approving the Opteron
NVIDIA supporting Opteron.
IBM 325 server is Opteron Based. Significantly cheaper than Itaniums and even Xeons.
NetBSD UNIX 64 bit.
Linux Mandrake 9 64 bit
Suse Linux Server 8.2 64 bit
Oracle 9i in Beta for Opteron.
Apache HTTP Server 64 bit.
DB2 in Beta for Opteron for both Windows and Linux.
MySQL 64 bit.
EnSight Q3-03
DIVX Yes DIVX Codec for Linux 64 on Opteron.

NOW FOR THE ITANIUM SUPPORT.

Nothing really. Call me Itanic.

Dont worry I hear X-Box2 might use an Intel if it doesnt melt the casing.

However, according to a North American reseller of server systems, the Opteron is selling better than sales of Xeon and Athlon MP chips put together.

Sure, if that was the case than AMD's revenues from CPUs should have increased by several hundred percent and not be in the money trouble they are in today.

Check yahoo and you will see that a lot of investment firms have increased thier view of AMD over Intel in the next quarter. Opteron is officially released on the 23rd.

The worlds most power full computer in the world will be completed next year and will be running Opterons. Not Intel or Itaniums.

In fact the 4 of the top 5 will be running Opteron.

Take Opteron seriously because I cant ever think of a time that anyone considered an AMD processor for a Super Computer. Lets face it the Athlon MP was a toy. Now to have 4 of the top 5 Supercomputers being built around Opteron. That says something.

Much added value to the thread from your comments?

To see Initiated with a Buy or Hold from so many companies signifies the company is making headroom and getting noticed.

Actually, it was launched on 4/22/03

There's always a "next year we'll have the fastest" whatever statment. We'll talk when it comes to fruition.

You are correct... This is a first for AMD. What any of this has to do with your misconceptions about Prescott, I have no idea.

We are getting off topic huh. Thanks for the corrections.

Seems all focus is on the 14X lines release date for desktops. Even my head was on it.
