Prescott confusing ...

HI ,
I just would like to make sure one thing before i do my upgrade during christmas time.... is prescott can be use on current 875,865 mobo ? or have to wait for the newer chipset ? thanks

The first Prescott will use them. Then it will go to a different socket (more pins, a lot more) and.... maybe😕

As with many things in the past, if ( and its a big if) the motherboard makers strictly adheard to intels design guidlines the first prescotts should work, if they didn't, they won't.

he main problem with the current 875/865 boards is some of them do not have the capability to supply the necessary current to the processor. The higher end motherboards do, but some less expensive or cheaper one's do not.

I'm waiting. Do some small upgrades now, then a year from now, get a Prescott + PCI-Express capable motherboad...with R423 or R450.

Prescott will initially be used on 478 pin motherboards. However Intel is currently having heat and power problems on the Prescott chips. Thus rumors state that the initial Prescott will not work on most current motherboards. All chips go through multiple revisions. One of the major changes in each revision is to remove many of the current leakage (thus reducing heat output and power requirements). Thus after a revision or two, rumors state that Prescott will work on current motherboards (assuming they were built to spec).

If memory serves Prescott will require at least a 4-Phase power system on the motherboard. That is why (assuming that Prescott stays Socket-478) Gigabyte has been toteing Prescott support on their motherboards with the additional Power Card.
