Presario R3000 audio broken--device detected, but no sound

This is probably the weirdest problem I've ever encountered with hardware. I have a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop (AMD64 3000+ Mobile), which uses SoundMAX Sensura Integrated Digital Audio. After reinstalling XP, I found on the Compaq website that there was a BIOS update available, so I reflashed the BIOS. I then installed all the updated drivers I found on the Compaq website. The system shows the correct audio device as being installed and working properly, but when I go to the Sounds and Audio Devices, it displays "No Audio Device." There is no way for me to select the correct device, either. I've reinstalled the device multiple times, to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!

When you say you have re-installed, how did you do this?, in device manager>properties page, does it show location of device correctly.

I uninstalled the device, and reinstalled it using both device manager and the driver installation package. It shows its location correctly.

I just reinstalled Windows XP from scratch--same problem!

Yes I did. That wouldn't really help anyway, though, since there are no options to disable or enable the onboard sound in the BIOS.

can you try running through the options - spid etc etc
I had a similar problem, and just trying some different configs sorted it out, even though it worked on a setting it shouldnt have done!

Ok... well, I uninstalled the device through Device Mangler, something I'd already done 5 or 6 times, restarted, and Windows recognized and reinstalled the device, as it had already done several times. Now it works. There's no reason for it to work, and for the sake of my own sanity, I'd rather it still be broken, because I can't figure out how doing the same thing on a computer 6 times would work once and not all the others. Thanks for trying to help!
