Presario blinking cursor, won't boot.

Got a Compaq Presario 1275 notebook. 366 Mhz K6-2, 64 MB Ram, Win 98, 4.3 HD.

When turn it on all I get is a blank screen with blinking cursor upper left hand corner. No boot. Used to get to the Compaq logo, no more.
The dude says he uninstalled Word Perfect. Who knows what else he did. So do know about that being the cause.
Don't seem to get it to boot from a startup disk either. Maybe the A:\ is not in the sequence.
Not sure how to get into the bios.
Does anyone have any ideas or happen to know the F keys to get into the bios on a presario?

Help, thanks, Mac
