My grandpa bought a Compaq Presario 2700US in late 2001. It's been about 4 years and the laptop hasn't given him any major problems besides "user error". My grandpa always falls for those stupid wizards that pop up *somehow* and either bridge his wireless access card and mess up his network settings. Well, his latest fvckup was he installed AOL 9.0 becuase it could get rid of his "viruses". Anyways, the laptop when I got it was almost dead. It would boot past the compaq logo but would od a continous reboot loop. So I nuked the HDD with DBAN and I had a hard time doing a clean install of XP. First time around, the install of XP was snot slow aand fvcked up somehow. So I nuked the HDD again and installed XP again. Did okay. But for the first few hours of using the laptop, it was slow and unresponsive. I got SP2 downloaded and installed that. After a reset, everything is fine again. But what really worries me is the HDD. I heard it making LOUD clicks all the time during the install. And even now, it does it every now and then. Am I looking at a failing HDD? Right now the computer is completely fine. It's not slow or anything. Any thoughts?

it's prolly the HD. TO test it, see if it makes a difference by leaving your laptop off for a few hours, then booting. See how long it lasts compared to restarting it again right after it freezes or whatever. If there is a significant difference(half an hour + ), then your HD is dying. If so, backup data to another HD, and buy a new one.

Noise doesn't always mean the HDD is going, but it is never a good sign. Just keep any critical data backed up and either wait it out or replace it now.
