I just built a new computer, and have recently installed a copy of Windows XP Pro. It is one that I actually had on back up, so now I am planning to purchase a copy of Windows XP Pro for this new system. I am planning to buy the OEM edition since I can get it pretty cheaply. I know that it is intended to be run on a system with nothing installed on it already, so I was wondering if anyone can tell me what I should do to my system in order to be able to use my newly purchase OEM copy of XP.

Do I need to just format my hard drive(s)? It's my understanding that an OEM copy can not just "install over" a previous copy.

Thanks for your help...

don't know if any changes are made regarding your original install but if you do a repair install on your present system, you are asked to enter your xp cd serial number. you don't loose your data doing a repair install!
are both copies of xp OEM versions?

No. The original copy that I have is a regualar WinXP Pro. copy. It is not an OEM copy. That is why i want to get an OEM so I can have the usual paper work and since it is a brand new system that i just built.

What are the benefits of purchasing WinXP pro versus WinXP home edition? Since i am using for home is there any reason for me to get Pro instead?

Mainly, I use the computer for games, internet etc. Basic stuff. I have two other computers that I network for basic file sharing stuff. Any thoughts?

I'd save money and go with the Home version. Read this link if you are interested in the differences.
