I'm waiting on EMSComputing.com to ship my new Antec 1040...any day now. So much for "same day processing" charge my Visa, but don't ship the stuff. Oh well.
Anyway, my computer desk has a compartment that the case sits in, behind a door. It's actually a stylin' desk. However, as stock the compartment has a 100% closed back, the airflow stinks. Or should I say that airflow is non-existent? Who designs these things anyway; chimps with crack pipes? Well, for my current (old now?) case, Antec KS282, I had cut a hole in the back panel about 7 x 9 inches. This rectangle corresponds with the placement of the PS and rear case fan exhausts. Sweet if I do say so myself. Whenever the PC is on, the front door of the compartment is open, drawing in fresh air thru the front case fan and exhausting thru the rear case fan/ps fan, which conveniently have a "clear line of sight" to the outside world via the hole in the rear of the compartment. The really sweet thing is that the rear of my desk is against a wall, so you cant' tell there's a hole in the back.
Well, the new case is taller, and has one more exhaust fan (2 total, not counting the PS) in the rear, necessitating more hacking of the poor computer desk.
Mind you, this isn't a 1/2 inch plywood KMart special. This is one of those Sauder put-it-together-yourself jobbies. I've gotten quite good at assembling these things...actually, all my bedroom furniture is do it yourself! You just can't tell by looking at it. Anyway, all panels of the desk are 3/4 inch laminated pressboard. You need a Jigsaw or a Sawzall to get thru it. And it makes a ton of very fine sawdust when you do cut it.
Basically I had to triple the size of the hole. I just cut out the entire back of the CPU compartment, exposing the entire rear to the outside world.
Natch, I had to completely remove every last article from the desk. Case/monitor/printer/modem/router/CD roms/stickies/beer cans/speakers/pretzels you name it, it all came out.
Hacked away, sanded it down, vacummed all the crap up (30 mins for the vacumm job :Q !) Sprayed some Pledge on the whole thing and put it all back together. All that needs to happen now is I get my new case and transfer the guts from the present case to the new one.
The best part about it is that my case isn't sitting on the floor, exposed to all the dust that flies around my little apartment. Yes, it gets dusty inside the case, no I don't use filters, yes, I open it up, religiously, every 6 weeks or so to vacuum the mobo/fans/cards. When everything is off and the door is closed, everything is so neat and tidy. Did I just say "neat and tidy?" Oh boy, better get another beer.
The point of this post? No clue. Just sharing. Just demonstrating what a man with a mission and power tools can do to make his little world a better place. Have a good night.
