Preparing for shoots. How do you keep track of ideas?

I'll get an image in my head and I'll want to save it for later. How should I do this? I'v worked with photographers who draw out their ideas on napkins and actually use them the day of the shoot.

I can't draw.

Right now I'm thinking of coming up with an outline that I can fill out. I'll leave room for mediocre drawings of light angles ect.

What do you guys use?

Keep a little pocket-size notebook with drawings, diagrams, sample images. Flip through as needed during shoot. Quick and easy.

I use a pcoket notebook. Also useful for people's names that might appear in a photo. On the hi-tech side, I have considered using an iPad or smart phone.
