I think the only decent one would be the HBO channels - at least there are some half-recognizable shows / movies. Why anyone would pay $15-25 extra/mo. for other channels is beyond me. Right now we get Showtime/Cinemax and all the other movie channels except HBOs free till the end of the year and we never even watch them. When we had HBO with cable, we liked it better.

It's not even a matter of personal preference... the shows on travel channel, discovery, TNT, TLC... those are the ones we actually wind up watching.

HBO has hit a dry spell as of late. But how can you say that Band Of Brothers, Sopranos, Entourage, Rome, and Sex in the City, OZ, ect were worthless?

Showtime has been picking up the pace with their original programming as of late and providing some great shows.

I agree with everything you say. I could have written this.

HBO was great for a time but their shows as of late suck ass.

I cancelled HBO after my 3 free months were up with Dish. The value isn't there any more. I'd rather spend that money on a Netflix subscription.

You can always wait until they come out on DVD...

HBO has some good documentaries each week during the summer on Mondays. I think a lot of their shows got delayed by the Writer's Strike. Not sure. I know they have some good stuff in the works.

Showtime has Weeds currently running and just finished its run of This American Life. Dexter will resume at some point.

Lately HBO has become the "Skrek The Third" channel.

But hey, I did finally see Order of the Phoenix.
Isn't it great how evil also goes home for semester break? All the dark forces of the world are amassing, but hey, no problem, you kids go home for break. Evil can wait.:)

Haha, wow, how's that for coincidence. Shrek 3 is actually on HBO right now.
And hey, it's on again at 11pm!

The John Adams miniseries and the movie Recount are recent on HBO. Last summer's Flight of the Conchords was pretty good too. We also have HBO on demand so you can watch recent episodes of their shows and a decent selection of movies.

That's the cost of one trip to the movies to see something that probably sucks. Worth it to me.

who is paying $15 - $25 a month for this? I think we pay a total of $10/month for showtime and hbo, and will just re-up when the new promo comes out

My parents get free Starz HD with their HD package and I think that that's a better channel for them than HBO used to be...nonstop movies and they're usually more palatable (good for my parents).

It's refreshing to watch a show without advertisements in your face - even if you've already seen it 14 times.

Either you watch HBO for the quality Drama (hit or miss), you watch Discovery/Sc for the shiny colors/machine/nature, TMC for the oldies (but goodies) or you are wasting your time.

<--fvkign $180 a month for this sh!t and cutting it off since I don't use it

FIOS TV: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www22.verizon.com/cont...ackages+and+prices.htm"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www22.verizon.com/content/fiostv/packages+and+prices/packages+and+prices.htm">https://www22.verizon.co.........and+prices.htm</a></a> (2nd tab)

Cablevision is $10/mo. each so if you have sho & hbo, that's your $20.

If you read it again, I basically said HBO channels are the only ones worth anything at all. Love Entourage, and they have some good, recognizable movies from time to time. I can download a 30-min, once-a-week show like Entourage though. And Band of Brothers has been done for a while now. The rest... thumbsdown;

I never get them unless I can get them for free. Not worth the money IMHO.

I really need to see Superman 2 and Overboard and The Breakfast Club all over again. Especially with no commercials! And now they are in HD. Sweet!

We got a free HD DVR with Dish, so I just scan ahead one week on all the premium HD channels and set it to record anything interesting. As of right now I have 14 recorded movies I still want to watch but haven't had time yet.

Plus I did just watch Conan The Barbarian in HD which was awesome.

I'm thinking of cutting HBO, I rarely watch it anymore. I feel like I'm throwing $10 or so out the window every month.

HBO sucks for me because they show everything in FULLSCREEN, which I hate. I don't even have a widescreen HD TV.

I cut all satellite service a year ago. Smartest move this decade. I get plenty from the over the air antenna with a pc based dvr. Without the dvr, you're a slave to the schedule.

if no one has said it yet, they also play the same damn movies over and over and over...you pay extra to see "better" movies but you only get to see the same 5 movies for 4 weeks straight.

HBO comes with my Dish Network package, and Showtime gave me a $25 rebate + $5 service for life, so I have both. Showtime is good for soft porn after 11pm :D

premium television is analogous to satellite radio. i prefer having my dvd collection / netflix subscription for viewing, and mp3 player for music - noones controlling my playlist

I was just staying at my parents house while I had business in my hometown for two nights and rediscovered Skinemax.

How much do I have to pay just to get that on my system?!?

I agree. I watch two shows via DVR, and it is amazing how much time I spend fast forwarding through commercials.
