outdated text

that's the top cantidate for the look of the homepage... not that color scheme at all, though. it's probably gonna be black color scheme, and lighter text...

anyway, that's the top cantidate for the orginization of it... i'm thinking about dumping the ugly mug, though 😛

Updated Text

This is the updated text, with an updated color scheme, and an updated layout.

remember, this is JUST the homepage. the actual format of the system once you get into it will be much different. there will be a nav bar either on the left or top, and the ugly mug will remain the background, but i've drowned it out a little... it's meant to give the user some fear 😛 also, i'm working on getting that file as small as possible, i want it to load quickly.

Looks...kinda...amateurish. No offense, but I wouldn't try to make it too artsy-fartsy (i.e., the picture of yourself makes it look like you're trying too hard). The content is the most important thing about your page.

My friend Phil has an amazing website, and I'm in envy of his (my site is in my sig). His is at http://www.stereoboy.org - prepare to be impressed! 🙂

EDIT: you can make your page cool without making it overdone - I think the mark of a good web designer is when he or she can attract visitors with a killer design without taking attention away from the content.

Also look at http://www.antipixel.com

like i've said before, i am the absolute worst when it comes to composing a site look.... i can do it if others show me what they want, but composing a site is terrible for me...

if you want to put a picture of yourself then just put a regular one up. The one you have now looks like you used every filter in photoshop!

Unfortunately, I think that's the look he was going for. 😛

You're trying to make it too complex. Go for simplicity. Read up on CSS, draw the layout up on paper, then do a mockup in Photoshop and finish it in CSS.

With that design, you are looking at about 20% usuable space. Meaning that, everything you have to say has to be said in 20% of the page...

In other words, you waste a lot of space with that design.

I would scrap the picture altogether. I hate using pictures, usually. I only use them for some backgrounds, or a real dramatic effect off to the side, like a single flower next to the title, or something of the sort. An entire image of you with a few photoshop filters is kinda lame, and kinda looks conceited.

What I do when I make a design to to take a page from a newspaper or magazine, use a sharpie and draw lines in between the articles. Then, I take the thumb and forefinger of both hands, make a square, and move around the page, looking for a good general layout. Do ya.. get what I'm saying?

Then, I take one color I think looks good, and I use a colorspy to vary the color a bit and make the accent colors similar to the original.

Lastly, it's smart to plan what you want to have a site before you make a design. If you plan on having lots of pictures, then a design like the one you posted could never succeed because there just isn't enough room for a picture in the small body space you have. As a general rule, the body space should take up around 50% of the page at any given point, whether you scroll to the top or the bottom, etc.
You can take a little less space for it if you text is smaller and well-organized.

that picture is way too stretched out. I think thats some band thing right? I know my buddy has that as his AIM buddy pic and he says its the logo for some band he likes. Also, nowadays real sites dont really have "front pages" unless theyre there to ask u if your over 18 or not.

Just look at some nice pages, and see that u can have a nice looking thing on top with a logo and saying what the site is. Then u can have logos on the side, and you can have a welcome message or whatever in the space where your content will be later. Sorry, too 7th grade multimedia yearbook for me.

it's not a band name....

it's my face. take a look at the original incarnation. it's that picture, i replaced all the other colors with red, and got rid of everything but the face. then i darkened the face a lot, to make it a maroon color, that is what i have decided to use as a background. the background will be pinned in place with the text floating over it.

i'm actually gonna darken it a bit more... the maroon isnt dark enough for me.

<bullsh1t>this is to reflect my very dark personality </bullsh1t>

anyway, i've been doing a bit more work, and the home splash page will either stay as that, or turn into a blog. but i'm not a blogger, so it'll be hard 😛

anyway, here's the revised staple page. (page that has all the text... all the other pages!... except the forums... the forums will be PHPBB forums.
