Interesting to see people defending Islam by calling such practices "cultural" so soon after the Sultan of Brunei imposed Sharia on his nation. Brunei became officially Islamic in the fifteenth century, when Christianity also was a fairly brutal religion. Christianity has since mellowed considerably, but within Islam it's always the seventh century. Within that same area we have the even smaller but similarly wealthy predominantly Buddhist Singapore and the larger but somewhat poorer predominantly Christian Philippines. Given their preference and equivalent economic status I doubt anyone here would prefer to live in Brunei of the three.

'Honour killings' happen all over the world and are committed by people of all religions and have a history that goes back as far as human history in general.

For example:

"As noted by Christian Arab writer, Norma Khouri, honor killings originate from the belief that a woman’s chastity is the property of her families, a cultural norm that comes "from our ancient tribal days, from the Hammurabi and Assyrian tribes of 1200 B.C."[48]

Matthew A. Goldstein, J.D. (Arizona), has also noted that honor killings were encouraged in ancient Rome, where male family members who did not take actions against the female adulterers in their family were "actively persecuted".[49]

The origin of honor killings and the control of women is evidenced throughout history in the culture and tradition of many regions. The Roman law of pater familias gave complete control to the men of the family for both their children and wives. Under these laws, the lives of children and wives were at the sole discretion of the men in their family. Ancient Roman Law also established historical roots of honor killings through the law stating that women found guilty of adultery could be killed by their husband in whatever manner the husband desired. In ancient Rome, being raped was seen as dishonorable to the point of destroying a woman's life and reputation, and honor killing was supposed to be a "merciful" act.[citation needed]In Greece also, the lives of women were dictated by their husbands as females were considered socially below males.[50]

Among the Amerindian Aztecs and Incas, adultery was punishable by death.[49]

Qays bin Asim, ancient leader of Banu Tamim is credited by some historians as the first to kill children on the basis of honor. It is recorded that he murdered all of his daughters to prevent them from ever causing him any kind of dishonor.[50]"

To simply write the concept off as 'Islam' is, at best, ignorance.

Oh please. Islam sucks, no one's defending it. It's a fucking disgusting religion, just like Christianity and Judaism are absolutely disgusting. Some old practices like honour killing are ancient cultural practices and not because of Islam. Is honour killing in the Bible because of Islam? No. That would be absurd. I don't like Islam but I don't want to be an ignorant fool about it and go on denying facts.

In America you mutilate children's penises and the law allows it. Is it because of religion? For most it's not. It's a cultural practice I find absolutely disgusting but I don't go on blaming religion for it.

In Uganda they sacrifice children to witch doctors. Is that because of Christianity or Islam which are the two main religions there? No, it is an ancient cultural belief and practice that has nothing to do with Christianity or Islam.

You cannot have it both ways...either Islam is the religion of Peace or it is not!!I do like your take calling this cultural now that's a new twist to defend Islam and to gloss over the blatant lack of respect for human life...sad

Honor killings are happening up here in canukistan also. our country is being innudated with 3rd world immigrants and we have no politicians willing to do anything about it because they don't want to lose votes.

Hijacked democracy. I predict a bosnian type war within a decade.

Not all of them approve of this. I have a Pakistani friend in the U.S. with immigrated parents and he's the nicest, most gentle guy I ever met.

For the vast majority of Muslims Islam is a religion of peace.

That is funny I don't hear much condemnation from those peaceful Muslim's when something horrendous is done in the name of their religion.

Maybe it's due to the fact you don't live around or work with Muslims. From my experience most Muslims are outraged by what extremist are doing in the name of their religion. Many Muslims are busy trying to make a living and support their families to get involved with protest against extremist. It also is not very wise to be too vocal as the extremist may take actions against the person and their family.

Islam will be a religion of peace, once everyone is converted. Until then, not so much, and since this won't happen....

One minor distinction is that these Islamic honor killings are occurring in the 21st century.

In my opinion many of these middle eastern countries don't want to live in the 21st century. They want to keep their people ignorant and clinging to barbaric ways and ideals. They will never truly grow as a civilization if they can't shed some of this damaging, and cruel ideology and views toward women and children. I just think they will remain barbaric for a long time to come. The rest of the world who is living in the 21st Century needs to keep a close eye on them, and lets all hope to god some crazy fanatical doesn't get to the nukes they are carrying. That is what scares me the most about some of these middle eastern countries.

It is truly sad to see some poor pregnant woman go through that and die simply because she wants to belief in her own religion.

And liberals here rail against evil straight white men and their war on women...

Haven't seen any of that myself, although I have noticed there has definitely been a fair amount of criticism towards religious conservatives and social authoritarians for their well documented war on women.

Pakistan, it just sucks. It's the Mississippi of the Middle East in a lot of ways. It should be noted this happened in Lahore too, a major city, not some village full of illiterate pashtun fundies in the Hindhu Goatfuck range.
