Lots of places in the world do just that, a year for Maternity leave, my employer also offers a year Paternity leave if the woman wants to get back to work and have the man stay at home

I wish the US put more emphasis on this.

You truly must be short on real life experience.
Couples who try to have kids can't magically make it happen and go months and years trying, my mother was told by her doctor she wasn't capable of having kids anymore, hmm there's my brother
Just clueless
The reason why she found out at 5 months she was denied is most likely because she was preparing to put in the paperwork, these things take time to grind through, before she ended up accommodated near the end of her pregnancy

It sounds like the policy was written to address people who were attempting to abuse the system, and didn't think of pregnancy. It could be a case of them not having officers to cover her shift, but it doesn't really say.

More likely it's you trying to justify male ego bullshit. They don't need more officers, they just need to reassign. Sheesh.
