Hey!
I read on the internet that changing the registry entry for the prefetch from 3 to 5 makes your system boot a lot faster. Well I did that, an the boot time was increased sooo much i couldnt believe it. Im just wonder, what does this actually do? Im guessing it must do something, otherwise it would always be disabled

LOL, i found this article, but is that saying that changing the value to 5 so that the system starts up a lot quicker, my systems performance once in windows is going to be decreased?

I read on the internet
.... so it must be true.

You must have seen that here. Even the first line says 'on some machines'.

Im guessing it must do something, otherwise it would always be disabled
Let's see, the documented values are 0,1,2,3:

0?Disable
1?Application Launch Prefetch
2?Boot Prefetch
3?Prefetch everything

There for 5 must be the super secret do the same thing, but secrectly make it faster!

Look at the list, above. What other option do you feel is missing (and undocumented) that you've discovered?

Are increased boot times a good thing? I just don't get it.

I have no idea even where this tweak came from. There is no documentation at all that even says 5 does anything as bsobel pointed out.

sorry, I was meant to say boot times DECREASED, my mistake. Im just wondering though what it does changing it to 5, surely there would have a negative affect somewhere, but I cant find anything on the internet about the affects that happen from setting it to 5, only that it does help boot time
