I'm redeeming a code for ten free songs from iTunes. I guess I have to get the software first. Should I go for the latest version or seek out an older version for Windows? If I should go older, why, and where should I get it? Not currently available at oldversion.com.

In the off-chance that there's some undesirable feature, such as sending out personal info, or preventing file conversion, etc... I normally don't use iTunes at all, thus I want to know what I'm getting into first so I'm asking here.

You have to use the latest version for some of the downloads.

Personally, i liked version 4.0 the best since after that the program just got slow in doing anything with it.

whoops...accidently voted for 5.0 instead of 4.0

You realize that the songs you download from the iTunes music store are only going to play in iTunes or on an iPod? I don't know of any personal information that iTunes sends to Apple.

The only feature I'm missing now is the ability to search the MP3-tags of files not ripped in iTunes itself in the CDDB. iTunes lost this with 4.5 or 4.7 as far as I know (speaking of Mac versions). But nothing really speaks against the newest version in my opinion.

I'm using 6 right now, and it does seem to respond very sluggishly. And this is on a P4 3.4 with 2GB of RAM.

Edit - My install of 6 also seems to be stuck in 128bit MP3 for the DLs, no matter how many times I try to change them to Lossless. When I try to convert to Lossless, I get an unknown error 50. :|

I normally use Winamp, 2.95 to be exact. But that won't let me download my free songs.

Bateleur et al, I bit the bullet and went ahead with the latest version. I did notice they were 128k, but I guess that's okay as most of my songs are at that bitrate anywhere. I would expect better from iTunes though.

kamper, thanks for the info, that and other info like it is what I am interested in.

I thought the same thing.. I love my Nano and Mini but 128k absolutley sux. - there's plenty of Russian sites however that offer the same songs/albums at any bitrate you like. And at 10% of the cost. But hey, you didn't hear that from me.
