Best bang for the buck.

Intel or AMD based?

I've always loved my Toshiba's.

Some people love their A64 eMachines. I prefer Dothan laptops from Toshiba or HP. HP is a better value, Toshiba has better quality at a slightly higher price. IBM rules the roost in quality, but you'll sacrifice features compared to a similarly priced Toshiba or HP.

IBMIBMIBM. ... eye - bee - M makes the most durable notebooks. But they are more pricey than your Dell's. Toshiba is a good one, i have 2 friends with them and they are seem to like them.

Just remember... stay away from your big 'kitchen sink laptops'. Ya its nice it has a '9600ati' card in it but your not going to want to tote that thing around a year from now. You want it to be as little and light as possible. And Buy an extra battery, and remove a floppy so you will actually get the quoted battery life. They like to fool you with that one.

I hate to say the word but a fruit company make a nice laptop too.
