Preference: New IP or Existing IP?

Modeps

Lifer
So, there you have it. Does the thought of brand new games get you all hot and bothered, or do you prefer something that has been done before, but expanded upon in bigger and better ways?

No, you can't pick both... its a preference question, you HAVE to lean moreso to one side than the other.

NOTE: Please forgive the 'Men in Black' references in the poll, they are meant in no way to sway an opinion other than provide some new comic relief hotness for people who get tired of old and busted poles.

Apparently all Nintendo knows is the first option, which is getting really old.

I picked new, but thats not always the case. While I was more excited about Crysis, I enjoyed CoD4 more. If its a remake of an older game, say 10 years or so, one of your favorites, it can be very exciting. Such as, if they made a new Tribes game, I would be more excited than any new IP, because Tribes is my favorite game of all time.

I tend to get more excited for Existing IPs but I often tend to enjoy the games based on new IP a little more. It's not that I don't enjoy the sequels but there's just something new discovering games that I really enjoy.

hmm this is really a tough question. honestly i like both of them.

but all in all, i would have to say i get more excited typically about games from existing IP, however when a new IP comes along i usually don't get that excited till after i play it.

i think the only new IP i got really excited for before I played it was Gears of War.

however games like God of War and Uncharted, after playing those you realize just how freaking awesome they are and then get excited for the sequels. I would say that's how I feel about most games, even Ratchet and Clank from back in the day, it waskind of a game I wasn't that excited for but after I Played it was really excited about sequels.

so i personally picked existing IP's, although it's very VERY close to me, but it just has a slight edge.

I agree, this is tough. But when I really think about it, I think I actually get more excited about new IP these days. Although most end up not delivering, I enjoy the anticipation of something new and mysterious, or just different. I wanted a 360 for Mass Effect and Gears of War, and those games completely delivered. Nothing beats playing through something completely new and satisfying for the first time. Of course, you can get this from existing IP, but it has to be significant like Super Mario World or even Super Mario 64.

I think if I leaned more towards existing IP, then I would own a Wii and would be playing Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess, Mario Kart, etc.

I'm a bit less excited about new IP as I am about new ideas and unique games. If we're talking about clones, one being new and one being existing, I'd probably prefer the existing, assuming both are actually good.

Theres plenty of new IPs that are just run of the mill crap FPS games, I'd take a new call of duty over them any day. But boom blox rocks, not because its a new IP, but because its a unique game.

I get excited about good games.

Looking at my shelf, I probably have more new IP games than existing IP games if you exclude sports games.

New IP. I'd rather play the next Bioshock (when it was a new IP!) than the 5th in a series. You can always make improvements to existing IPs but it's usually never as good as the first time you get immersed in the new world.

Take KOTOR for example. Awesome. A lot of people give the 2nd one grief but I didn't think it wasn't that bad. I think the first one had such an awesome story that there was no possible way for the second one to live up to the hype.

I'll break the rules and say both. New IP's breath fresh life in the industry, but existing popular IP's are what keep it going. I'd want to play a new IP like Bioshock as much as I want to play an existing IP like GTA4.

I get more excited about existing IPs, especially ones that haven't been done in awhile (Fallout 3) but I usually end up having as much fun playing unexpectedly good new IPs (Bioshock).

The second KOTOR had a different developer.

I think people get more excited about new IPs when they come from a developer that is known for a great game in the past, especially if the new IP is similar to the previous game(s). Mass Effect got a lot of hype from being developed by Bioware. I never played the System Shock games, but I understand it was responsible for some of the hype for Bioshock.

All other things being equal, a new IP is much more likely to fail than an existing IP.

This is a bit of a loaded question. In general most people are going to like existing IPs. The reason is obvious. If it's an existing IP and you're planning on buying the next game in the series, that means you likely enjoyed the first one. So the chances of you enjoying the next game are greater than when buying a completely new game. But I think most people enjoy new IPs that prove to be good. I don't really want to play the exact same games every generation. It's good to have new IPs, they are just more of a gamble.

New IPs are great and all but nothing matches the nostalgia and legendary status from the old IPs... new IPs eventually become old (and that's when they become good) so yeah, it's great to see innovation and new IPs but games based on older IPs are generally better in my opinion.

Dude, that got old for me after the NES. I was done with Mario right after Super Mario Brothers.

I probably enjoy New IP's more, but I get a lot more hyped up about existing IP's. There's a difference in expectation.

depends.... it's just like with movies.
If I know the people behind it, and liked their previous work, even if all that previous work was tied to one IP, I'd be more likely to give that new IP a chance, than if it was a new IP from some developer with a sketchy/no past.

Sometimes though, I enjoy a certain IP so much, I definitely want more.
Like Zone of the Enders. Absofuckinglutely loved that game. Never played ZOE2 though, but I definitely want ZOE3. All I knew from Hideo Kojima prior to ZOE was Metal Gear Solid... and so happened that a demo disc for MGS2 came with Zone of the Enders.
Thankfully, it sounds like theres a pretty good chance Kojima wants to work on a third proper installment of ZOE (not counting handheld). I hope so. A PS3 Zone of the Enders would be amazing.
