Prefered diagnostic software?

What Diagnostic software do most of you prefer to use when working on computers?
Of course something that you can boot off of, rather than running something from Windows.
Anything good that's free/open-source? For diagnosing hardware (hard drive,ram,cpu, running virus scans, etc?)

Another member here developed an automated removal script that works reasonably well (although it is slow).
