based on past trends, could someone make an educated guess as to when/if the 939 socket will be available in a 3000 or 3200? i'm itching for my first A64 and am having trouble holding out. 'bout to break down and get the s754, especially with the price drops. what would be my estimated wait for a 939 < $250?

Why wait?

Dual channel is about the only advantage of 939, since there are very few people that will upgrade their CPU w/o upgrading their motherboard.

Since the real wait is for PCI-E for A64, i wouldn't bother waiting for a 3200+ or 3000+ for 939 (if that's actually happening; i hadn't heard anything for sure)

Check out the reviews on this site to see how negligible the performance boost is with dual channel on the A64s.

"AMD Prepares Affordable Processors for Socket 939"

AMD is kinda vague, but they will be releasing an A64 3000+ for s939, I'm guessing late Q4 or early Q1 '05. And yes, you should wait for PCI-E (if you want to reape the benefits of DUAL gfx cards :))before upgrading if you dont need to upgrade immediately. Maybe those cheaper 939 chips will be out the same time as PCI-E and youll be set :).

But if you must get an A64 now, getting a s754 chip only lets you upgrade up to 3700+, which, dont get me wrong, is a really fast chip. But if you get s939 (which, yes, is much more expensive), you will have more flexibility for upgrades and you will only have to upgrade the mobo when PCI-E comes out instead of the cpu and mobo. In the end it all depends on your budget, needs, and how flexible you want your upgrade path to be.

"Mainboards for AMD64 processors supporting PCI Express bus are expected to emerge in Q4 2004"

?At AMD, we do not give out details of unannounced product specs or launch dates as a rule. But you can certainly expect a wider range of AMD processors for the 939-pin socket in the not-too-distant future,?

ah ha! straight from the horse's mouth. looks like i'm getting my 939 and PCIe mobo for christmas! lets just hope dfi has a lanparty for the 939 by then. the one for 754 is sweet!

Some sources this week said that AMD would drive the lineup of Socket 939 AMD64 chips down to the 3000+ model number, or to the segment of about $200 per chip shortly.

slurmsmackenzie - At one time the lower cost S939 processors were suppose to be out by Nov. I'm not sure what the current best guess is. See this link.

It is a tough time to know how to plan. Today, the best bang for the buck is a 754 A64. As others have pointed out, there is not much advantage with the 939's. In my case, I would like to put an A64 system together, but I don't want PCI-E, yet. I would like to use my AGP 6800 GT a little longer. I'm going to keep waiting awhile to see what shapes up with processor prices and the 90 nm processors. I would pay some premium for a 939 processor system just for a little more upgrade room.

What is clear, though, is that if you've waited this long, socket 754 is not something you ought to be buying at this point or thereafter. It's an end-of-the-line platform. The AMD action is going to shift to socket 939, and stay there.

i don't agree... seems to me that the majority of the enthusiast market is geared towards latest and greatest within one's means. from what i've gathered, those that buy a processor, normally buy a new mobo. processor speed is no longer the main issue. it's how well can your mobo overclock. chipsets change so frequently giving more options to the overclocker, that barring any unforseen circumstances, a new mobo will be "needed" when it's time for a processor upgrade.

the prospect of dc memory and PCIe sweetens the deal however negligable performance gains may be. it simply allows breathing room. and from the enthusiasts standpoint, having that room is about bragging rights also. i can't wait to get my new rig up and running with my atop z alien case and a 939 system. however shallow it may seem, it will help me sleep at night. LOL and the prospect of two video cards is tantalizing, also. i'm getting all tingly just thinking 'bout it.
