What is clear, though, is that if you've waited this long, socket 754 is not something you ought to be buying at this point or thereafter. It's an end-of-the-line platform. The AMD action is going to shift to socket 939, and stay there.
i don't agree... seems to me that the majority of the enthusiast market is geared towards latest and greatest within one's means. from what i've gathered, those that buy a processor, normally buy a new mobo. processor speed is no longer the main issue. it's how well can your mobo overclock. chipsets change so frequently giving more options to the overclocker, that barring any unforseen circumstances, a new mobo will be "needed" when it's time for a processor upgrade.
the prospect of dc memory and PCIe sweetens the deal however negligable performance gains may be. it simply allows breathing room. and from the enthusiasts standpoint, having that room is about bragging rights also. i can't wait to get my new rig up and running with my atop z alien case and a 939 system. however shallow it may seem, it will help me sleep at night. LOL and the prospect of two video cards is tantalizing, also. i'm getting all tingly just thinking 'bout it.
