I hate it when people claim Sony is backtracking on their statements. They aren't. Things are remaining exactly as they were with the Ps3. If publishers want to add online passes or other DRM it's their choice just as it is in the current generation.

Just relaying what people I know were saying. I understand they are keeping the model exactly the same, and pledging for first party titles to not use any DRM other than disc validation.

I certainly hope MS knew they would be this mad, as it was easy to predict (people have bitched about used games for a long time insofar as how next gen would treat them), so I guess they just made a calculated decision on the matter.

I think MS saw dollar signs. If they could skim off the used games sale by offering a deactivation service or whatever, they could make extra dough. Especially if they could promise a percentage of that for big publishers.

I suppose Sony saw how unpopular it was and left it alone.

Possible privacy violations by Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox One have come under new scrutiny since it was revealed Thursday that the tech giant was a crucial partner in an expansive Internet surveillance program conducted by the National Security Agency and involving Silicon Valley’s biggest players.

One of the console’s key features is the full integration of the Kinect, a motion sensing camera that allows users to play games, scroll through menus, and generally operate the Xbox just using hand gestures. Microsoft has touted the camera as the hallmark of a new era of interactivity in gaming.

What Microsoft has not promoted, however, is the fact that you will not be able to power on the console without first enabling the Kinect, designed to detect both heartbeats and eye movement, and positioning yourself in front of it.

PS4 has access to more memory - 7GB vs. 5GB of XBone
PS4 has upgradable HDD
PS4 allows the sale/trade/sharing of games

Most likely PS4 will sell far better too which means most likely more exclusives on PS4 long-term.

I also bet most Xbone exclusives will be XB1/PC, which means if you get a PC + PS4, the XB1 is completely redundant unless you can't live without Gears and Forza.

Nintendo will likely drop the price of Wii U to $249-279 once PS4 launches, leading the way for casuals/budget gamers while PS4 will capture the hardcore gamers, leaving XB1 in no man's land. It's hard to comprehend how MS messed up this badly. If anything they could have made the most powerful console, with the most features and undercut Sony without trouble since they can afford to, while Sony is losing $ which means it's much harder for them to undercut a financially strong company like MS.

I am of the opinion both of them have failed to move far enough. The PC is about to get Virtual Reality headsets with the Oculus Rift and 4D guns. Not to mention the fact we now have 120hz screens, higher than 1080p resolutions and very soon 4K (with the hardware to actually run a game at that resolution).

Comparatively both the new consoles are more or less just mid range PCs with pretty standard controllers. They are cheaper than a PC but neither has really pushed the world of games on in an exciting way. While MS may have punched itself in the face with its hatred of its own customers that leaves Sony winning by virtue that it just updated the hardware with more modern components. That works as a strategy I guess if VR wasn't looking likely to arrive in the home later this year. MS might be making a PS4 a compelling option from a consumer rights and privacy perspective but neither MS or Sony has a console that is really ready for Virtual Reality, nor did they decide to push such a thing themselves.

Roll that decision on 5 years and it could be a disaster for both parties, VR has a very real chance now the hardware is near good enough, but the PC ecosystem can't change its graphics pipeline to suit the new technology. A console could have, it could have removed the latency and made for a very compelling device.

I think they both missed the opportunity presented, the main difference seems to be Microsoft chose also to strap a land mine to its balls.

You forget that it's only the gamers on the internet who are crying foul over the DRM and such. The real war will be waged when mom and dad walk into the store to buy one for their kid.

If the X1 fails, it'll be because of the price, not because of DRM, used games policies, Kinect, etc.

I don't think people realize how the gamers/internet control a lot of culture. You think that guy behind the counter at gamestop isn't a gamer/redditor/internet guy? He is. He's going to tell the moms/dads who ask for advice to buy a PS4. Done.


If mom hears a story on the news about no used games, she will overreact and buy a PS4 instead. Done.

If mom hears her kid talking with her friends about the negative stuff they read about the XBone, she goes with PS4 instead. Done.

And that's probably not counting repeat buys of RROD 360s by the same people which greatly exaggerated 360 sales.

A lot of people, myself included, just sold the dead one as is and put the money on a slim and didn't bother repairing the flawed system so it could break again.

I'm sure enough ADHD Halo/CoD types couldn't be without for more than 5 mins ran out and grabbed a new system too and just threw away the old one.

The Wii brought them back from the brink because it was a huge gimmick that everyone bought into, the Wii U is an utter failure and could spell the end for Nintendo as a console maker.

My precise impressions are this, put succinctly. Bad hardware, bad policies, bad PR/management actions, bad pricing, and super strong competition. The only thing Xbox has going for it is inertia, and that's being annihilated in social media, which is the dominant force in communication these days. Hell the crapstorm is carrying over into mainstream media and even in the financial markets.

If I were in charge at MS (hello Ballmer, where the hell are ya man?), I'd make drastic changes NOW. PR the crap out of 'listening to gamers, we hear you', and hope for the best. If they do nothing but spin, or lipservice only (anyone who heard the digital 'sharing' option knows that it's baloney btw), they are doomed. Even if they change EVERYTHING for the positive now, they'd still be fighting an uphill battle. To win, they'd need to :

Give XBL free for a year
Take F2P/Netflix out of paywall
Lower price to $349, make Kinect optional (hell, give it away as a loss leader/razors and blades), but make the freaking thing disconnectable
Take away mandatory DRM
Pack in 2 solid launch titles
etc.

Gonna happen? Nope.

Unless they REALLY turn around Wii U soon with an AVALANCHE of quality first party games in the next year, nobody will buy a new Nintendo console ever again. That was on hardware. I'm sure the 360 and ps3 decimated the Wii in terms of software profits. Most people bought Wii, played bowling for a week and never turned it on again.

Nintendo made 3 major mistakes with the Wii U release:

1. Considering the current gen consoles were going on what? 8-10 years? All they had to do was make a console that hardware/graphics wise was higher than those and people would have been more accepting. They didn't really do this because they were banking on the success of the Wii and must have thought they could do it again.

2. It looks / named too much like a new model Wii (which screams last gen). Most people see it as "why can't I just buy the controller and use it with my Wii, why do I have to buy a completely new system?" Marketing for it has been abysmal.

3. Games...or lack of. Seriously companies, if you are going to rush out a system to beat the competition, at least have the games ready to back it up, or delay release. No one wants a console with no games. This one always baffles me. They did this with the 3DS as well, and I believe the Gamecube.

I can't say I've always been a Nintendo fan. While I loved the NES/SNES I didn't care for the N64 or Gamecube much. I did actually enjoy the Wii but for different reasons.
