Precott has 30 stage pipeline?

This sounds like BS to me but news.com is reporting unidentified sources that say that Prescott will have 30 pipeline stages. I always thought that the Prescott was supposed to have 22 stages?

I just noticed that the article says that the Athlon has a 15 stage pipeline when it in fact has a 10 stage pipeline.

Yeah that seems a bit higher then what has been reported...I wonder what kind of penalty that would have in branch prediction??? The added stages in the pipeline rumored to be in the prescott were needed to add scalability yet the talk is it is the penalty that makes the prescott not a big performer against its brother the northwood....

Ofcourse we will all have to wait and see when it actually is officially released...

Yeah, but that may be becuase they likely are using the same source and ZDnet.....

I will search for the article of the site that disected one early on and went through a very detaled anaylsis of the changes in the prescott from added cache to areas of unknown....

I checked Aces' forum and there was some talk on the 20th that some russin site was reporting the Prescott has a 32 stage pipeline. I was unable to find a direct link to the claim on the russian website. http://overclockers.ru/

Prescott only had 2 branches added, for 22 total, the northwood is 20. A 30 stage pipeline would be a MASSIVE performance hit.

Athlon has 10 stage integer, 15 stage floating point. Opteron has added two so 12 and 17.
Optimal pipeline depth is somewhere around 40 stages, if I remember correctly.
Good luck getting there.
