Hi, all

Before selling a smartphone, I wonder if a factory reset will be adequate for privacy protection, due to the nature of electronic data storage using ROM/NAND.

I've in mind info like personal data, Google Wallet, bank account and other passwords.

I use TrueCrypt on my PCs but no encryption on phones or tablets. Perhaps a good practical approach is to NOT store sensitive data on a phone/tablet, but this is next to impossible with Google accounts, Google Wallet, etc.

Your input, please!

There are apps that write 0's. (or equivalent) I used this once before;

Forever Gone
Based on the description, that app is only for SD cards though not for a phones internal storage NAND.
I have no idea, but I would think flashing to stock ROM with ODIN should clear everything(assuming this is a Samsung device).

If you have Google Wallet setup then make sure you clear your information from inside the Google Wallet app as if you do a factory reset on the phone without clearing Google Wallet you will trip the secure element and Google Wallet will not work after that.

Before doing a factory reset or wipe of any kind, users should go into Google Wallet, go into Settings and check the option of “Reset Google Wallet.” This deletes all the information and makes sure that the secure element doesn’t trip itself when the phone is reset.

I've sold lots of phones - I generally just do a factory reset. Good enough for me.
