Alright, an older co-worker of mine asked me to find her a computer. She'll just be doing email and basic web surfing so nothing fancy. Yet when I go to HP and Dell sites, they have an over kill on a cpu. I mean she doesn't need a 2800+ and a 2.4+ cpu! Does anyone know a place that you can have like 1800+ systems built that offer support? That's the main key, this would be her first computer, and as much as I can help her, I can't be there 24/7. So would need a place with good tech support and warrenty. Anyone know a place?

overkill or not, for the small price difference betwen a 1800+ and a 2500+, it can't hurt.

Yeah, but trying to find a decently priced system, and the difference between the 1800+ and the 2800+, there's a larger gap. I mean, with HP thus far, you can't even go below 2.0GHz.

See, the problem I'm having is, I'll go into the customize settings because she needs the OS, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Printer...the works. I'll upgrade to those, but then downgrade on the cpu, memory and HD and end up right around $700. Does that sound about right? I guess I'm biased because I would never spend $700 on these types of systems.

get a Dell Dimension 3000 for under 500... this includes a 17" monitor... or for less you can get a 2400.. and for someone that no tech skills its good couse it comes with free life time support, where with the other ppl you got to pay for support.

If you're looking for a really inexpensive PC for the basics, Staples is selling a Compaq (2.53GHz Celeron, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, DVD/CD-RW, 56K modem, 10/100 NIC, 17" CRT monitor, Windows XP Home) for $629.96 - $180 instant savings - $50 MIR = $399.94.

All you'd need to do is upgrade the RAM to 512MB for her to get better performance and that's it.

The special is in this weeks ad.

Thanks for the heads up. And I doubt she'll need 512MB, I mean, I have a puter that's downstairs that my brother plays EQ on that only has 256MB, and all she's going to be doing is web surfing and emailing. Thanks again, and I''ll let her know!

Please don't flame me.

Consider going to eMachines.com (OR e4me.com).
Can pick up a nice little computer for $400.
They are much better than they used to be. I've set up several for parents and friends and never noticed all the problems other people seem to have with them.
Look into their warranty info if you are nervous.
If you don't like the overkill factor just remember: a 2.5GHz celeron is still just a celeron.

Again, I don't need flames. By this time I think we've all heard enough on people's eMachine opinions.

I'm thinking the best options here are finding one in a weekly add to stables, office max, comp usa or bestbuy.

XP needs at least 384 megs of ram. At 256, it swaps all the time. At 384, it runs ok. Most companies won't offer 384, so just go up to 512 and it will make a big differance.
