I am not interested in a Dell.

I've been on the same PC (Athlon XP 2500 / 1 GB DDR / 9700 Pro) for around 2 years.. I think it's time for an upgrade.

Does anyone know of a company that has some good quality prebuilt PCs? I'm looking for something in the $1300 or under range.. I need the best bang for buck...

Don't they use a different type of hard drive?

I need to download.. lots.. of.. stuff.

No. Same optical drive, HD, cables, CPU, RAM.

I think Apple's HD system (HFS?) is different than PC's (NTFS) ... but I may be wrong

True, but you can set OS X as HFS and XP as NTFS. The only problem is that XP can't read HFS and OS X can read NTFS but can't write to it.

I had an almost identical system for 3 years (2600+, 1gb ram, 9700pro)

Recently upgraded since radeon went bust. I got an E6300, Gigabyte DQ6, 2gb corsair twinx, 7900GT, etc. This was the second system I built and was finished in 90 minutes flat. Just pushed power button and went straight into windows setup.

I know you specifically said pre-built, but why not save LOTS of $ when it is so easy?

Because you won't save "Lots of $". It's no longer possible to under cut Dell's pricing with custom built computers.

OP, what exactly do you have against Dell?

1. I would want a case like a Lian Li or Silverstone or Coolermaster.. something that Dell doesn't have. Looks are very important to me.
2. I'm an Anandtecher/nerd. We don't buy Dells.

I agree on the low-moderate end, but you can still save a lot of money on the high-end by building yourself, as long as you are smart about it.

Apple FTW. You can switch between Mac and PC w/ bootcamp.

$1300 will buy you a lot more PC than a $1300 Apple capable of running Windows using a mobile processor in a stationary desktop. A *LOT* more.

For instance, a 2.66 Core 2 Duo processor runs $500, and you could put a system together for a ballpark $1300 using that processor. The only Apple system capable of running Windows and be in that performance bracket woult be a 2.66ghz $2500 Mac Pro, and for most tasks there would be little if any performance difference.

If you'd get an education other what you learn off of Apple.Com/propoganda you'd know this.

Also, a mobile processor version of a typical desktop processor is slower than the standard version. The mobile processor doesn't get a performance boost because you have an integrated LCD. With the Apple you are forced to choose between either server processors, or mobile processors in a desktop...neither of which makes sense.

Try finding a dell with E6300 (3.2ghz easy ^_^), DQ6, 2gb TwinX ddr800, 650w PSU, 7900GT, 400gb hd for ~ $800. Granted, where I'm from dell's are not available, so if you find such a thing its cos i didn't check so dont flame me if there is;)

I'm not buying that you got all that (plus a legal copy of windows, of course) for $800.

Newegg prices:
Cheapest 7900GT = $250
DQ6 - $240
E6300 = $180
2gb RAM = $200

And that's not including the power supply, cd drives, and the case/psu.

dell or emachines. if the 2 has the same spec for the same money, i'd go with a dell.

and just by saying you think mac's need different stuff... that means you don't really understand computers...

I used previous copy of winxp, and the system @ my country's exchange rate is about $850, give or take a few dollars for every currency fluctuation. HD was free on a this week only offer for a purchase over so much money, and I just cleared that amount ;). I was lucky, but I'm guessing in america you can buy such a system for $900-950. Again, any good comparable pre-built pcs?
